Product Review

Not that bad for the money

by   PEDIT ,   Jun 4, 2002

Pros:  Price, 30 station presets

Cons:  lack of bass, station tuning, tone control

The Bottom Line:  For $89.00 it was a deal. I would not pay any more for this unit though. Would I recommend this to a friend, for $89.00 yes.

Overall Rating: 3/5 stars

Author's Review

First of all, I don't recall anywhere on the box of the unit or in the manual that it stated, "Dolby Pro Logic". I believe this unit is not Dolby Pro Logic.

I wanted to purchase a "very" cheap receiver for my den. I already have an expensive Pioneer VSX-24TX. So I did my homework on the internet and found out that Sherwood RX-4103 was on sale at Circuit City for only $89.00! So I jumped in the car and had it home in before you can say "bargain".

I hooked it up to a pair of Bose 100's. First thing I notice was how horrible the programming of the AM/FM stations was. After I figured out the programming. One of the functions that was on the remote was called Power scan, it went through your choice of programmed stations. I noticed that when you tried to use this function you had to get up and push a button to get it into the pre-programmed channels. Did not like that at all

I started to listen to the quality of sound. There was definetly a lack of bass. The treble was too tinty. Separation seemed to be pretty good. I actually started to like the unit after a while. The remote was small and the buttons were small as well. Mentally I kept comparing it to my Pioneer Elite but had to keep saying to myself, $89.00 over and over. There is no mid-range adjustment and the display is on the small side.

After several days of listening I actually started to like the unit. The unit pulled in fair amount of long distance stations rather well. This receiver would be good for an early teen or possibly a dorm room. But for me, I eventually took it back because I found a better deal on a Pioneer (I'm partial to Pioneer).
