I have used the
Sharpie Magnum Marker in Black. This marker definitely left an impression!
Description & Cautions
This is a wide permanent marker. It measures 5 7/8 long x just over 1 wide. The marker body is metal and prominently marked as a Sharpie Magnum. The black cap is designed to fit on the back of the marker so that it doesnt become lost.
The 1/2 chisel tip of the marker is constructed from wool. The ink is is also highly water resistant but not labeled as waterproof. It is also quick drying.
The ingredients in this marker are: dyes, xylene (1330-20-7) and cresol (1319-77-3). This information is from the MSDS (Material Safety Data Sheet). This is an excerpt from the MSDS: Sanford Corporation has been advised by council that the OSHA Hazard Communication Standard does not apply to the Sanford product
The information contained in this MSDS is forwarded to you for your information, but is not meant to imply that the product is covered by the Hazard Communication Standard, nor is the MSDS meant to comply with all the requirements of the Hazard Communication Standard.
There are several cautions regarding the ink that are written on the side of the marker.
The warnings include:
* Danger
* For industrial use only
* Harmful if swallowed
* Vapor is harmful
* Combustible; avoid open flame
* Avoid contact with eyes and skin
* Use in a well ventilated area
* Keep out of the reach of children
* Do not shake
My Experiences
I love the Sharpie brand markers. They last a long time, write well, and are dependable. I have never had a marker break, though the tips will eventually show some wear (particularly if a lot of pressure is applied to the tip with repeated writing).
What I most dislike about the Sharpie Magnum marker is the smell. Earlier today I used one to write a quick note on a lined notepad, and I can still smell the stink. The smell is giving me a headache
and this is just from jotting a short note. The odor is noxious. As soon as I finish this review, I am rewriting my note with a ballpoint pen and throwing away the paper with the Sharpie ink on it.
The marker cautions to use it in a well ventilated area. I always write with this marker in an open area, not in an enclosed office. No matter where I use it, the ink smell is invasive.
This marker does produce bold black markings that are easy to read. The written line measures just under 3/8 wide. The outside edges of the lines are slightly fuzzed. That means that this marker does not produce writing that is as sharp and clean as a regular Sharpie marker. Like most Sharpie markers, the writing will bleed through regular 20-pound paper so that a few dots of black show on the next page.
Comparing this Sharpie marker to the other Sharpie brand markers I have used (and I have used a lot of them)
I find that the wool tip on this Magnum marker does not hold its shape as long as the other Sharpie marker varieties.
This particular marker is used by many people. I grab it when no other writing utensil is available and have used it to write on paper. I have also used it on thick cardboard, and the marker ink does not show through on the opposite side. The marker is designed to write on a variety of materials. The manufacturer says it will work on plastic, stone, wood, foil and leather.
The aluminum barrel of this marker makes it light to hold. My hand is not completely comfortable with the wide diameter of the barrel, but I never have to use the marker for prolonged periods of time.
At the moment, we share one of these markers for when broader, more visible black marker lines are necessary. Everyone in the company prefers using the Sharpie fine point permanent markers for everyday use.
Purchasing
These markers cost $3.29 each from
W.B. Mason.
Summary
The
Sharpie Magnum Marker writes with a bold easily visible line and lasts a long time. However, even using this marker in a large open area in the office or warehouse, the smell is still horrible and causes headaches. Im also concerned about the danger warnings on the side of the marker. If you really need a Sharpie marker that makes a statement, then this is a good marker ... just dont inhale.
I hope you found this review useful.
