Product Review

No Sound !!

by   one_listen ,   Feb 20, 2008

Pros:  Good Picture, convenient size, easy to hook up.

Cons:  Power buttons on top, low quality sound

The Bottom Line:  Good Value since it includes the DVD player, but you may need to hook it to a stereo for adequate sound.

Overall Rating: 3/5 stars

Author's Review

I recently purchased this TV to add an HDTV to the bedroom. The 26" size was perfect. The TV is really pretty light and I could easily lift it on top of the dresser by myself.

As far the connectivity, this TV has one HDMI input as well as an s-video and component video in. It also has one digital out for audio.

This brought us to the first of a few minor issues. The power cord is only about 5 feet long, so if you put it on a tall dresser, the outlet needs to be directly behind or you will need an extension cord. The second issue is that the power button (and all other buttons) are on the top of the set, not the side or front like some models. Again, being on a high dresser I need to turn the unit on by "feel". It does come with a remote with all the features you need, so this is a minor inconvenience.

I hooked it up to an HDTV cable box using an HDMI cable and had the set up and running in no time. The TV has several picture size options and you have to "Zoom" to fill the screen with an HD signal. I found this a little odd, but quickly read the instructions and figured out which modes for which type of pictures. This is another inconvenience though, as my main TV has a "full" setting that leaves black bars on the sides and automatically fills the screen when I switch to an HD channel. The Sharp forces you to change the setting if you want bars on 4:3 but full 16:9 for your HD channels.

Lastly, my biggest complaint about this TV was the sound. The speakers seem to be on the back of the set, facing the wall! This means you have to turn it up to 3/4 volume to hear it at all. I'm not sure I'll be able to hear it at full volume once air-conditioning season rolls along.

In summary, I found the picture good and the price was cheap, but I wish I had bought a similar Samsung without the DVD player for the same price.
