Product Review

so far so good

by   lancestc ,   Dec 18, 2007

Pros:  super thin. got a great deal$. pick up others on demand movies

Cons:  gigantic crappy remote doesnt control other dvd/vcrs yet

The Bottom Line:  I'd get it again if its a good deal. The on demand converter is pretty cool.

Overall Rating: 4/5 stars

Author's Review

I'm not a TV guru so this will mainly be from a basic user experience. I wouldn't have bought such an expensive tv, but there was just too great of a deal to pass up ordering direct from Sharp at $1200 on special. Once I finally got the TV (delivery was a real pain) I lugged it upstairs, not all that heavy really for a 46" tv and then slid the box across the floor. Then I went to pick up the box and surprise...there was only a small piece of tape holding the outer box onto the main TV support and the box just came right off leaving the tv sitting on my floor in its foam supports. Luckily it was sitting on the floor but that would have been horrible if the small piece of tape had given way when I was carrying it. There were really three pieces in the box, 4 if you count the remote. I don't have a wall mount so that meant I had to take the two pieces of the base and put them together (base accounts for maybe 20% of the weight so its lighter if you just wall mount it). Pretty easy with an included hex bit to attach the base pieces and then to the TV. I plugged it in, popped in the speaker connections, cable, and dvd and without too much trouble ran the auto config which found tons of channels I didn't know I had. The few digital and HD channels were a lot more detailed than my previous tvs but the colors needed a little tweaking to get it just right. Use a DVD with this feature for that.
The best part was after a few weeks I figured out that there was a range of channels where I could see other peoples on demand movies. After a little searching I found a link describing where it is really your neighbors on demand you see but it may go away as cable companies encrypt it. Supposedly the internal tuners are what allow this tv to do this on channels 86.1 to 89.10 on my tv. Decimals you ask? Yes that was a little weird, now I have decimal channels. Much harder to just surf with this many channels but I pretty much only watch the free on demand stuff now anyway. It seems that channels are duplicated as analog and digital and I also get a lot of weird local channels now. In the last few months I have had a few quirks with the remote but after a bit of fumbling I get it working again.
