Author's Review
After seeing a good price in an ad for this TV, I finally decided to ditch the old tube. I originally was going to purchase the 42", but chose the 46" for $300 more after doing some quick comparisons. Besides the size, the 46" has a higher contrast ratio and faster response time. It also has an "OPC" function, which adjusts the display due to changing light conditions.
I was a bit worried about banding after reading numerous complaints on the web. Happily, mine does not have any banding issues. Just in case, I would purchase from a local retailer that allows you to easily return or exchange if there is an issue.
Initially I had my HD cable box connected via quality component cables. The Best Buy rep said I would experience a noticeable difference by connecting with a HDMI cable instead. Being a HD novice, I took his advice and ditched the five cables for the one HDMI. Amazingly, it did improve an already sharp picture. The factory settings are also a bit bright and on the red side. It only took about 5 minutes of adjusting to get the picture set up.
The sound quality from the speakers is only so-so. However if you are going to own a TV of this quality, you probably use surround sound anyway.
The appearance of the glossy black enclosure is very nice and streamlined. The TV will look beautiful in your family room.
If you are military, the price at the NEX for the 46" and 52" models are several hundred less than most retailers.
