Product Review

Sharp AF-S100DX Air Conditioner

by   Ladysmom , lead in Pets at Epinions.com ,   Jun 29, 2003

Pros:  Cools without costing your life savings.

Cons:  Sharp doesn't make a central unit like this window unit.

The Bottom Line:  Easily installed, quick cooling and quiet. A high quality product that is expected of Sharp.

Overall Rating: 5/5 stars

In August of 2002, the inside unit of our central air conditioner decided it wasn’t going to cool anymore. Poof, that was it, it said it was tired that it had worked for us for 15 years and wasn’t going to work anymore.

It was 1am when the dogs woke me up to a house that was unbearably hot. They were panting and packing their little doggie treats and toys and going to a cooler place to live. It must have been pretty bad for the dogs to want to leave.

That morning when I got to work I called an air conditioning company to come out and fix the unit. They arrived around 5:30 pm so my husband or I could let them into the house.

Diagnosis, unit died when under undo stress of keeping a 3,600 sq. foot house cool. Our only choice was to replace the inside unit or completely replace both outside and inside.

We sat there for a second then asked the nice young man what it would cost for replacing everything so we wouldn’t have to go through blistering heat again. He calmly gave us an estimate that required the paramedics to be summoned to the house. The paramedics said they get this kind of call a lot during the months of July and August.

We opted to have the inside unit replaced but in the meantime it would be several days before it came in. Now what were we going to do. The dogs were packing again. There would be no sleep with that kind of heat.

After the repair guy left I went to Lowe’s to check out their window units. Hubby wanted one that would run off 110 and not have to rewire the whole house just for a few days.

Thank heavens they still had a few units in stock as that time of year in the south, air conditioners are hard to find.

After talking with the gentleman that works that area I decided on the Sharp AF-S100DX Air Conditioner. It is a window unit that was easily lifted by the salesperson so I new hubby wouldn’t have to get help.

The Sharp AF-S100DX Air Conditioner came with a remote and a foam rubber sealing gasket to insert around the window so cooling wouldn’t be lost and bugs would not enter the house. It also has a remote control for ease of setting and turning off.

If you have a person that is disabled or the unit is mounted too high then the remote is a wonderful thing to have.

There are side panels that slide out to cover the openings in the window as the unit is not large enough to take up the whole space.

Within one hour of me arriving home, hubby had this air conditioner installed and running. The reason it took an hour, he had to finish watching a TV program.

The Sharp AF-S100DX Air Conditioner is a 10,000 B.T.U. that will cool approximately 450 square feet of living space. We weren’t exactly sure how large our room was but knew it was close. We also wanted the bathroom cool as there is nothing like taking a shower and sweating as soon as you jump out.

The unit is extremely quiet when running, you do know it is on but it isn’t so loud that you can’t talk or watch television.

The vents are on top of the unit and are easily adjusted with the touch of a finger. There are four different directions that the vents can be adjusted to so you don’t have to have the air blowing directly on you if you don’t want.

The house was 95 degrees inside and within 1 hour and a half the room was cooled to 75 degrees. The air conditioner was cycling on and off.

There are three fan speeds as this can be used instead of cooling. This is great for those days where an air conditioner isn’t needed but you want air to be circulated.

The temperature settings are digital and can be set up or down depending on how cold you like your room. We keep it set on 75 and that is plenty cool for us. Just gently use the touch control pad on the front.

There is also an energy saver pad. You can click this on and the air conditioner will turn itself off when the room reaches the temperature that you have it set for.

Included with the Sharp AF-S100DX Air Conditioner is a timer, this can be set for up to 12 hours. That is really nice. We would set the air conditioner to come on two hours before we got home from work so that the room would be cool and we could be comfortable.

The filter easily comes out and cleaned, it only takes a few minutes and you are back up and running.

We are still using this unit even though our air conditioner is fixed. In the spring hubby put the unit back into the window as it wasn’t hot enough to run a 5 ton central unit but just hot and humid enough not to be able to sleep comfortably.

There are times we will use the Sharp AF-S100DX Air Conditioner while the central unit is running because of the humidity being 100% and it hasn’t even rained. It will pull the moisture out of the air very quickly and the room will be comfortable again.

We haven’t noticed our electric bill being higher when using the Sharp AF-S100DX Air Conditioner, in fact it is lower. If we use the air conditioner while using the central unit, it doesn’t raise the bill either.

To me this has been the best $225.00 investment that we have made in a very long time.

We will continue to use the Sharp AF-S100DX Air Conditioner as long as it last.

If this one ever goes to air conditioner heaven you had better believe that I will purchase another Sharp window unit.
