Author's Review
Like other Farrelly Brothers movies, Shallow Hal has an eclectic sound. It blends new and old songs together. There are old songs like, "Baby, Now That I've Found" by the Foundations, and "After the Gold Rush" by Neil Young, as well as others. On the new front, there are songs by Sheryl Crow, "Members Only", PJ Harvey, "Good Fortune", and "Wall In Your Heart" by Shelby Lynne which you could also find on her new album. The three new songs I've just mentioned are particularly my favorites along with Darius Rucker's, "This Is My World" which is no Hootie tune, it sounds more Tom Jones-ish, which makes it somewhat schmaltzy. Other tracks worth a listen include Lucinda Williams's, "Lonely Girls", and Randy Weeks's, "Countryside."
Despite there being a whole lot of good songs, I did find some of the tracks irritating like the one from Neil Young and the Palo Alto track, which I believe was not even in the movie. From what I recall, the Palo Alto song was just included onto this soundtrack, and did not appear in the movie. That is one reason why the soundtrack is not as good as it should be. There are also songs from the movie that are not included that should have been, from artists like Cake and Ivy. This soundtrack might be one of those where you are bound to skip a few tracks before the next good song, but still it is a solid album. And even a better one if you see the movie, and relive the scenes that songs were attached in.
