Author's Review
Sergeant York,Alvin C. York, was the most renowned hero of WW1.The character of Sgt.York is played by Gary Cooper. In my opinion this was Coopers greatest Oscar-winning performance. Its a classic for any WAR movie lover. Its great for history buffs too.
The story of this simple minded, back woods, farm boy begins with him being just as I have described him here.Life being uncomplicated to him,he finds joy in his hard farm work.At this time in his life he finds drinking Whiskey a good past time. This by no means is favorable to his mother.Believing he is bound for Hell. She asks the preacher for help with his guidance.Young York is not receptive at first. He does, however, find his way to the LORD.
War breaks out.Much to Yorks surprise,he learns he MUST go to war.In his mind war is against all he has learned after excepting the Lord in to his life. After attempts at seeking exemption due to his religious beliefs,York is off to war.His mind is swirling with conflict.Religious beliefs versus defending HIS nation and fellow soldiers. The battle inside York's head is as real and understandable as WW1.
I dont want to give away too much about this wonderful movie. You will get a realistic view of times during WW1.From the tragedy's of York and fellow soldiers,to their hard fought victory's.I dont want to forget the girl back home. Her support is part of what gets York through these trying times.
You'll easily bond with the characters of this movie. How could you not with Gary Cooper.Weither a fan of war movies, action movies, true to life-history lesson movies or just like a good movie,Sergeant York is a MUST see movie.
