Sensibilities and Senses, along with Love and Devotion

Date of Review:  Apr 12, 2001
The Bottom Line: Best of the adaptations of the Jane Austen novels, this one sparkles with wit, excellent acting and one of the best screenplays around.
Review: It may look like from the con comments that I did not like this film. Quite the opposite! It has turned into one of my favorites -- and each time I watch it, the more I enjoy it.

All of Jane Austen's novels dealt with class, manners and...

To Love is to Burn, to Be on Fire!

Date of Review:  Apr 1, 2005
The Bottom Line: One of the five best Austen adaptations and among the best English language films.
Review: I cherish Jane Austen's novels. The best of the adaptations rank among my all-time favorite films. There are five adaptations I consider to be better than the others. I've previously raved about three of those: Pride and Prejudice, Emma, and...

Sense and Sensibility - As Good or Better Than the Novel

Date of Review:  May 17, 2008
The Bottom Line: A terrific story that is best appreciated when looked at as a sort of fairy-tale.
Review: My time in high school was before the rediscovery of the novels of Jane Austen. Perhaps that was good, because I didn t go into viewing some of the more modern film adaptations of her novels with any preconceived notions about how they should be. In...

A delight for the senses...

Date of Review:  May 15, 2001
The Bottom Line: This movie is the accessible Jane Austen, great for fans of old-fashioned romance who love a happy ending.
Review: I don't watch movies often, but every once in a while, I get a craving for Jane Austen in movie form. This is usually satisfied by watching the BBC version of Pride and Prejudice starring Jennifer Ehle and Colin Firth. But, I do also enjoy Sense and...

It's Only Sensible to Love This Movie

Date of Review:  Oct 19, 2005
The Bottom Line: If you're an Austen fan, this movie provides blissful entertainment. If you're not an Austen fan...well, why aren't you?
Review: There's a tiny but brilliant scene early on in 1995's Sense and Sensibility, that for me, sums up so much of the film's warmth and genius. Willoughby, the handsome and dashing suitor of young and passionate Marianne Dashwood, is visiting at the...

Ang Lee's Intoxicating Take on Jane Austen w/ Professor Trelawney & Snape

Date of Review:  Apr 2, 2009
The Bottom Line: Ang Lee's Adaptation of Jane Austen's Sense & Sensibility is a Rich, Enchanting Film Featuring Superb Performances from Thompson, Winslet, Grant, & Rickman. (4.5 out of 5)
Review:
Still popular for many years, the novels of Jane Austen has been ready by countless readers throughout the years. One of Austen's most popular novels is her first published novel called Sense & Sensibility released in 1811. The novel tells the...

Jane Austen Plus Emma Thompson Equals Moviemaking Brilliance

Date of Review:  Sep 1, 2003
The Bottom Line: One of the rare adaptations that truly does justice to the book on which it is based. Absolutely brilliant.
Review: Generally, when I see a movie based on a book which I have read, I prepare myself for disappointment. It is pretty hard to pull off a film adaptation that does true justice to a great book. Sense and Sensibility does just that. I watched a portion...

Sense and Sensibility: It Makes Sense to See It!

Date of Review:  Jan 25, 2001
The Bottom Line: I love this movie - Jane Austen's story is not only compelling; it's funny! It's a great way to enjoy a classic story.
Review: I first saw Sense and Sensibility before it was released to general theaters in 1995. We bought our tickets early, which turned out to be a good plan; when we returned to the Uptown Theater in Minneapolis, there was a line 4 or 5 feet wide that led...

The chickiest of chick flicks

Date of Review:  Jan 7, 2009
The Bottom Line: I'm not against chick flicks, I'm against boring movies - this is one of them.
Review: I don't understand why a film made with a lot of class, and set in historical time settings are considered so great (or at least present themselves as such). "Sense & Sensibility" is another one of those films, but it's not that it's bad, it's just...

A great "Chick Flick"

Date of Review:  Mar 28, 2007
The Bottom Line: If you are a woman, and consider yourself a romantic, then you will probably adore this as I do.
Review: I admit it, I love this movie, for so many reasons. Set in England, in the years before women could earn their own money, this is Jane Austen's story of sisterly devotion and the lessons of romance.

Kate Winslet (Marianne) and Emma...
