Sensibilities and Senses, along with Love and Devotion |
|||
|
Pros: Excellent adaptation of Austen's novel.
Cons: Most modern viewers will find it too slow and boring.
The Bottom Line: Best of the adaptations of the Jane Austen novels, this one sparkles with wit, excellent acting and one of the best screenplays around.
Review: It may look like from the con comments that I did not like this film. Quite the opposite! It has turned into one of my favorites -- and each time I watch it, the more I enjoy it.
All of Jane Austen's novels dealt with class, manners and were... |

Pros: Brilliant adaptation; romantic; funny; ingenious casting (especially Thompson and Rickman)
Cons: Character-driven story will not appeal to everyone
The Bottom Line: If you're an Austen fan, this movie provides blissful entertainment. If you're not an Austen fan...well, why aren't you?
Review: There's a tiny but brilliant scene early on in 1995's Sense and Sensibility, that for me, sums up so much of the film's warmth and genius. Willoughby, the handsome and dashing suitor of young and passionate Marianne Dashwood, is visiting at the ...

Pros: brilliant cast and adaptation
Cons: may bore some viewers
The Bottom Line: One of the rare adaptations that truly does justice to the book on which it is based. Absolutely brilliant.
Review: Generally, when I see a movie based on a book which I have read, I prepare myself for disappointment ...

To Love is to Burn, to Be on Fire! |

|
Pros: Austen's themes; great lead and secondary performances; sets; costumes; emotional depth of the script
Cons: The two most stylized performances (Grant and Rickman) won't be to every viewer's taste
The Bottom Line: One of the five best Austen adaptations and among the best English language films.
Review: I cherish Jane Austen's novels. The best of the adaptations rank among my all-time favorite films. There are five adaptations I consider to be better than the others. I've previously raved about three of those: P

Pros: Incredible acting from the entire cast, intelligent script, happy ending.
Cons: Some may complain it's outdated, but I disagree.
The Bottom Line: If you are a woman, and consider yourself a romantic, then you will probably adore this as I do.
Review: I admit it, I love this movie, for so many reasons. Set in England, in the years before women could earn their own money, this is Jane Austen's story of sisterly devotion and the lessons of romance. Kate Winslet (Marianne) and Emma Thompson (Elinor) ...

Pros: Marvelous story, acting, costuming, set... everything!
Cons: Not for those who don't like period films or films made from literature.
The Bottom Line: I love this movie - Jane Austen's story is not only compelling; it's funny! It's a great way to enjoy a classic story.
Review: I first saw Sense and Sensibility before it was released to general theaters in 1995. We bought our tickets early, which turned out to be a good plan; when we returned to the Uptown Theater in Minneapolis, there was a line 4 or 5 feet wide that...

Pros: Superbly adapted screenplay by Thompson and a perfectly cast ensemble!
Cons: It's not "Rambo, first blood" -- or is that really a CON?
The Bottom Line: A beautifully filmed, acted and directed story about not losing our heads over our hearts. Not to be missed, this is a great adaptation of the Jane Austen novel.
Review: I immediately fell in love with this movie when I saw it the first time. The award winning (just about every award, Oscar, BSFC, BFCA, Golden Globe & more!) screenplay by Emma Thompson is absolutely perfect! She truly did a masterful job & was worthy of...

Pros: Authentic Jane Austin masterpiece comes to life.
Cons: You have to have some substance and an attention span longer than Robo-cop.
The Bottom Line: This movie takes you into a historical period, fascinating. It taps into a personal heartstring that we can only pretend to show others in our deepest of souls.
Review: This is one of my all time endearing favorites.
The Victorian period that it takes place in, the location where the film was made. The beautiful costumes, gorgeous ornate settings and backdrops coupled with strong gifted actors sets the pace for an... |
