Finally, the search for sport headphones THAT WORK is over!
Date of Review: Mar 23, 2007
The Bottom Line: If you're looking for comfortable, good quality, sweat resistant earbuds that actually stay in your ears during vigorous activity, look no further.
The last time I remember using headphones during athletic endeavours that actually didn't bother me, it was when I was using a Sony Walkman (the cassette kind) that had the expandable headphones that sit on your head like a headband. So that tells you something about my frustrations over the last SEVERAL YEARS, for finding functional headphones that stay in my ears, sound great and don't hurt.
Thankfully, it looks like my search is over. I spent the last couple of days researching earbud headphones that were designed for sport use and I came across Sennheiser - never heard of the brand but their line of professional gear gave me some confidence in their quality, and the selection of sport models was impressive. Since the major brands have let me down, who not give these guys a try.
I originally thought that the MX75 might be the ones I would like the best, but when I got to the store unfortunately they were out of stock, but did have a set of these OMX 70s. I have had three other pairs of hook-over-the-ear earbuds (Sony x 2, RCA) and they were all terrible. Either the earbuds were too big and would fall out, or the hooks were too big and never made much contact with my ears. Plus, when I would sweat, they would all just slip out easier and slide around. And they were all terribly uncomfortable. It drove me nuts. I've also tried the 'around the back of the neck' kind, but the straps on those are always too long and flop around when I run.
When I saw that these had two modes of size adjustibility, I thought I would give them a try - if they didn't work, I would return them and get the MX75 once the store was back in stock.
Boy was I pleasantly surprised when I got home and tired them on!! The height adjustability and soft arms (that go around the backs of the ear) actually fit my woman-ears wonderfully - as soon as I got them on I jumped around to test them out and they didn't move an inch. I thought I would test out the extra set of silicone pads, which make the earbuds fit a bit snugger, and that makes them even better for me. I have the height on the smallest setting, so there's plenty of room for guys ears to fit as well.
Edit: I just got home from a 2 hour workout and tested these out for the first time and I am even more impressed. I didn't have to fuss with them once after time spent: on the eliptical machine, doing free wights, doing many different ab workouts, streching and doing some aerobic dance (just to really test them). I had my head sideways and upside down and they still stayed in place. I couldn't believe it. Plus, after two hours, my ears weren't sore at all. Also, the silicone carrying case is actually handy for keeping these de-tangled in my gym bag.
My only negative comment thus far is that to really hear the full base, you have to push the earbuds into your ears with your fingers. When you let go, however, you can't hear it as much. The sound, especially for working out, is more then adequate though in my opinion. Also, as this is a newer brand, they aren't as easy to find in the bigger box electronics store, plus up in Canada, there isn't a dealer locater on the website. I found them (in Toronto) and Computer Systems Centre on College Street.
So far so good with these little wonders. Can't wait to keep using them!
