Product Review

You'll like it and never want to live without it

by   eddiechoi79 ,   Oct 25, 2007

Pros:  Clarity, tighter rounded bass, diminished muddiness.

Cons:  None.

The Bottom Line:  Definitely recommend this to anyone running sound or instruments running through their own amps i.e. guitars.

Overall Rating: 5/5 stars

"Like taking a blanket off your speaker." That's the comment you'll hear if you ask BBE users.

First, WHAT IT IS NOT:
1) It is not an EQ exciter/enhancer. Many people, including myself, dismiss the product before knowing much about it labeling it as being an EQ based FX unit to add some sparkle on the top end and some fatness to the low end. It does liven up the EQ spectrum, but it's not an EQ enhancer nor is it a filter of some sort.

2) It's not a line-driver. I've heard people say that it's basically a line-driver used to preserve unity gain for long cables. It can be used as a buffer as with any other fx unit, but this is not what it primarily does.

3) "The BBE will probably color my tone." I've heard others say they like their tone and don't want to add an FX unit to color the sound. The BBE won't color the sound, it will take your existing sound and open it up.

What is it?

The sonic maximizer is a time-based phase correction device that works with your speakers to send certain frequencies before others. It's like a crossover device with a slight in-audible delay across the hi/low frequencies. It clears out the muddiness that happens when all of the tones jump out at you at once. You have to experience it to understand. There's nothing else quite like it as far as I've heard.

The sonic maximizer has two knobs. A lo contour and process. It's not simply a bass and treble knobs. The process is the wet phase correction signal and the lo contour is like a fat knob. You can play around with these two to get them dialed in the perfect setting.

SETUP:
Simply put it at the last stage prior to the amps. If you have a crossover, I would recommend using a channel for each.

APPLICATION:
For PAs - you can expect better clarity and perceived volume. Vocals and instruments will be more articulate and you can hear the nuances. For the low end of the mix, the BBE will round it out and get rid of the muddiness. The test is always to compare it on and off. It will make you a believer!

Guitars - A favorite setting is to put the BBE after your pedals and before the guitar amp. Your overdrives and distortion will sound tighter without those over/under tones escaping you. Your cleans will sound nice and sparkly. BBE has the Sonicstomp perfect for electric guitar in a small stomp box enclosure.
