Author's Review
When I rented "Scarlett" I didn't know what to expect. How could anything compare with "Gone with the Wind"? But, I knew I liked Timothy Dalton's work as well as the former Ms. Kilmer. I love period pieces and was willing to give "Scarlett" the chance to wow me. Wow me it did! As my friend who wrote the other review, I ended up staying awake long after my bedtime. I simply couldn't shut it off and wait to finish it the next night.
It doesn't take long before you feel yourself sucked back into the plot just as though time hadn't passed since the first movie.(What is it, 50 years?) The flow and continuation is just that good. Dalton is superb as Rhett, with his own steely eyed gaze and a presence that will knock you out if you're only acquainted with him from his James Bond days. Ms. Kilmer as Scarlett will also surprise you, and happily. This Scarlett seems more mature, more settled, and (thankfully) a lot less whiny/conniving than the first. The supporting cast is also excellent, as is the cinematography. The locations are beautiful, rich in detail and history. The plot twists were well thought out, and wonderfully brought together.
For those of you who love period pieces this is right up there with movies such as "Howard's End", "Sense and Sensibilities", and of course "Gone with the Wind". Loved those, you will love "Scarlett"
Honestly, this is another one that I just didn't want to end.
While I haven't purchased my own copy of "Scarlett", I fully intend to do so as soon as I can find it. However, I have rented it several times and it just keeps getting better! I believe even the menfolk will enjoy "Scarlett", though it might be over the heads of the kids.
So, don't be fooled by the long shadow that "Gone with the Wind" cast, "Scarlett" will not let you down and stands in it's own well deserved spotlight!
