Product Review

Smooth, Light and Mild

by   bettega ,   Sep 5, 2006

Pros:  Crisp, clean flavor. Smooth finish, without harshness. Excellent quality to price ratio.

Cons:  Mild flavor may not conquer afficionados. Smooth finish leads to excessive consumption.

The Bottom Line:  For a smooth, easy to drink tequila it is unbeatable in its price range

Overall Rating: 4/5 stars

Author's Review

I believe this Tequila has been revamped from a mixto tequila to a 100% agave tequila. There is a big difference in that change, because 100% agave is like saying "single malt", whereas mixto is only 51% agave. The rest is cheap fermented sugars which mean vile taste and bad hangovers.

The anejo is really quite crisp and mild, being distilled a total of 3 times to really wring out the impurities. Unfortunately, this also leads to a great loss of agave taste but makes it one of the smoothest sipping tequilas around. The flavor is a bit weak, but this drink is one of the mildest and smoothest spirits I have tasted, 100+ dollar bottles of Courvoisier aside.

The spicy, tangy finish is very short and lends itself to repeated sips which depletes your glass quickly leading to repeated pours which can really do you in if you're not careful. I drink VERY lightly and it took me about 2 hours to imbibe half a bottle of this stuff without even realizing it.

The problem when sampling in this price range is that flavorful tequilas also have some impurities which make them rough, or well distilled ones also lose a lot of flavor. The asking price is quite appropriate because when all is said and done it really is an exceptionally pleasant spirit to enjoy.

I think it's a great tequila to enjoy repeatedly because past the 2nd shot, you're not going to taste the complex flavors of the fancy ones as much. On the other hand, this lighter spirit's inoffensive nature will lull you into compliance and you can really deplete a lot of the bottle without feeling sick or guilty afterwards.
