Author's Review
This is really some of Dana Carvey's finest work right here. Any tims I play this DVD for anyone it's basically at least an hour solid of laughter. This DVD is filled with Dana doing his most loved characters in bits and pieces. I'll give you a description/review of each of the little snippets.
1. Ross Perot Press Conference:
This is a pretty funny bit where Ross Perot just starts indignantly going off on some whack story about how talking dogs and the Republicans are trying to implant transmitters in his head, and doctor photos to make his daughter look like a lesbian. It's just funny to see "Ross" get all fired up as he's trying to explain to the press, who is just too stupid to understand that his connection to the Psychic Friends Hotline is helping him avoid the extraordinary pitfalls that could have overwhelmed him.
2. The McLaughlin Group:
This is one of my favorite skits on the DVD. Dana plays John McLaughlin the guy who's had the panel on current affairs Sunday afternoons. Now, if you never saw the McLaughlin show, it's pretty much like the skit here, except the real John asked less random questions. You bust out laughing just to hear Dana Carvey yell out "WRONG!" Classic.
3. Hans & Franz
Not that funny seeing Dana tongue the camera. There's a better Hans & Franz later on the DVD.
4. Church Chat Montage
The Church Lady talks to Pat Robertson, Jim Bakker, Sean Penn, dances with Fred Savage, and jams on the drums with Danny DeVito. Moderately funny, but one of the lesser chapters on the DVDs.
5. Garth Bumper
This isn't very funny...I don't even remember what it's parodying anymore, but it doesn't get any laughs from me.
6. Pepperboy
Another moderately funny chapter. Dana is a Pepper waiter training Adam Sandler in the fine art of Pepper Delivery. A few moments of intense laughter, but this skit is stretched kinda long.
7. Massive Headwound Harry
This is only funny because the dog eats part of Dana Carvey's headwound wig. Aside from that, I never thought this character was very funny.
8. Impressions Montage
Dana does everyone. The funniest impressions are of Sen. Strom Thurmond in the Clarence Thomas "trial", and Dennis Leary when Dennis was doing Weekend Update. A pretty stellar chapter.
9. Tom Brokaw
Top 3 on the DVD. The premise is that Tom Brokaw wants to tape every possible news event that could happen in the summer so he can spend winter vacationing. It starts out with him "reporting" that Gerald Ford is dead. Almost every line Dana has to say starts with "Tragedy today..." This is bust-a-gut funny. Dana in his prime.
10. George Bush Montage
Pretty funny, as well, especially since it's got the actual George Bush clip in part of it. Most of these are during or before the Gulf War, so they have to do with Army stuff. Really funny.
11. Wayne's World - Communism
Top 10-Reasons Why-We're Bummed-Communism Fell!
Not super funny, but a good example of how Wanye's World worked. After all, that's what rocketed him and Mike Myers to superstardom. If you're wondering, #1 on the list, which isn't shown, is "Live From New York, It's SATURDAY NIGHT!"
12. Carsenio
Not just Carsenio, Ed McMahon's Party Machine, with Bell Biv Devoe! Dana does a pretty funny impression of Johnny Carson with an extended finger and a mohawk. =) Another good chapter.
13. Grumpy Old Man
This is the best, in my opinion. If you've ever seen the Dana Carvey special on HBO, the Grumpy Old Man bits are HILARIOUS! The bit on this DVD is about convenience, and how the Grumpy Old Man doesn't like it.
14. Hans & Franz
This sketch is actually stolen by Kevin Nealon, who plays Franz. But, still one of the best Hans & Franz moments.
15. Il Cantone
What's the worst thing that can happen when you take a date to an Italian restaurant? This. I'm surprised Kirstie Alley put up with as much as she did. Moderately funny, but nothing top notch.
16. Jagger/Richards
Mick Jagger's about to get married, so he turns to his main man, Keith Richards and asks him about getting married, and being nervous on his first night. Not full of laughter all the way through, but it has its moments.
17. Game Show Psychic
The concept was funny, but the execution, not as much. Mildly funny. Skip this track.
18. George Will's Sports Machine
Another mildly funny track. You can probably stop the DVD here...which is what I do...it also explains why although I've seen this thing 4 times, I've never seen the last 2 chapters.
If you're a fan of Dana Carvey, or of SNL, this DVD is something you want to pick up. I haven't checked out the Phil Hartman and Mike Myers ones yet, but I can definitely vouch for this one. Dana's amazing!
