Never fails to please
Date of Review: May 27, 2008
The Bottom Line: Really good, consistent performer that will please every palate.
There are few things I can count on as consistently as the "performance" of this wine. When I use that term I am referring to the fact that it has never failed to please. It is probably the most well rounded white wine I have had. It is an Italian white that I have not needed to scrutinize for "year", and have continually been able to satisfy even the most refined (yes, even French) palates.
The dry introduction is not overwhelming or chalky, as some dry whites can be. The after thought of the sweeter taste is not too fruity, although it has gotten smiles from even my zinfandele friends. The manufacturer states that it's an apple after taste, but I wouldn't have been able to identify it that specifically.
I wouldn't serve it with a red meat, but that's only because there are too many reds I enjoy. I feel it could sustain itself nicely with a pork dish because the opening taste of the wine is dry before it becomes sweet. I am not an educated winologist. I know what I like and don't expect to need to "enjoy the bouquet" or "look at the legs". This is a respectable blend that won't change it's mood on you. It's always good. You don't need to chill this wine excessively. I enjoy it even just below room temp. The taste is that pleasing.
The wine is also easy to find, which is probably why I've been able to introduce it to so many different people. When I am running late- there's not a liquor store that I can't run into to grab a bottle. Even Costco has it. The average price is under $20/bottle.
Santa Margherita is like the Vueve Cliquot (see champagne) of white Italian wines. Nothing dramatic, but everybody enjoys it. What's interesting about this wine is that I read the manufacturer was the first to use the pink Pinot grapes to create this white wine.
What's also nice about it is that good restaurants will carry this bottle. Although they will mark it up, I'm sure, at least you know what you're getting when you order.
now that I've made myself thirsty...
