Don't Judge A Sanford PhD Pencil By Its Looks
Date of Review: Apr 13, 2004
The Bottom Line: Don't get this pencil. Get the Dr. Grip pencil or the Sakura-made Sumogrip pencil. Both last much longer than this one.
I myself keep buying new pencils and switching grips and getting angry when they get jammed, etc...
So then I bought this pencil that worked very well for a while. A while, as in six months. Maybe some people will think that that's as long as you can expect for a pencil to last, but for me, I like my pencils to last me more than half a school year.
This pencil cost me between five and six dollars, which is pretty pricey. I really liked the grip and my teacher commented more than once about "Hey! I really like fat grips and erasers!" However, I found that since I grip rather hard when I write, I squeezed the grip out of shape. That's right, if you write really hard, DON'T get this pencil. Also, the grip looks really fat, which is what I like, but when you actually use it you find out that it's really just the same width as any other pencil. Plus, the line indentations in the grip leave marks and calluses on your fingers. The eraser, on the other hand, lasted for a long time but then deteriorated to the point that even if I twisted the eraser up, the plastic eraser holder would just sink right back down.
I'm a little nuts about warranties, so I sent this one in along with a long-winded letter explaining the various problems I had with this pencil, and could they please send me a pen. Needless to say, they did not give me a PhD pen, but they did give me a flexigrip pen or whatever those cheap rubber-barreled pens are called. I wasn't very happy.
All in all, this pencil was a delight for six months and then died.
