Gawd...I love this pencil
Date of Review: Feb 15, 2004
The Bottom Line: If you are looking for a trust worthy pencil this is it! It's twist action eraser supplies more eraser and the retractable pen-like tip won't poke you like the others.
I'm mostly a pencil user and tried many mech pencils. They were all fine and dandy, but I always found myself buying a new pencil once the eraser runs out (which was about every month). I was browsing through Office Max and found the Stanford PH.D. Yes, for an $8 mechanical pencil, it seemed a bit pricey (hey I'm a poor college student and I could use that money on other things...like food), but I decided to put 'caution to the wind' (yes I'm a litte over dramatic concerning such a silly thing...) and I bought it.
The thing that attracted me was the retractable eraser--which, at that time, was non-existent. Sure, I can buy those plastic retractable eraser devices (which I do own), but I always seem to misplace it during test time. Thus, I'm stuck without an eraser and by that time my mech. pencil's eraser is used down to an unusable stub...which I know many of you experienced. The only problem was finding replacement erasers for this pencil. I usually chop eraser refills (that were used for my retractable eraser device) and fit it inside the eraser cap...although it usually gets stuck the twist action stops working. I found I would have to shape the eraser (by erasing) to fit the cap. Yes, it seems like a tedious thing to do, but it's good time used. Especially when one wants to procrastinate! Like what I'm doing right now!
As for comfort, it has a pen like feel to it, and I found the nice rubber grip quite enjoyable. It was nice and squishy and it gave me a better grip. Although after rigorous use, it tends to slide off a bit.
The pencil has a professional style to it, and I use it whenever my boss wants me to write up something. If you want to impress your colleges, then you wouldn't want to use one of those 'fru fru' bright colored pencils. It wouldn't be professional. Tee hee!
I bet many of you have experienced getting poked by your mechanical pencil usually by the lead or the lead guide tips. This can be quite dangerous, as well. The Sandford Ph.d has a nice pen like tip that retracts in. It's kind of like a retractable pen, but you have to push the eraser top down and push the tip in whenever it's not in use.
