Product Review

I experienced nothing but PROBLEMS!

by   anajoco ,   Sep 2, 2002

Pros:  Cheaper than the Sony Memory Stick

Cons:  Terrible compatibility, you get what you pay for. Buy the Sony Stick!

The Bottom Line:  Do not buy this memory stick card unless you want to risk losing important pictures. I have had numerous problems with the SanDisk and ZERO problems with the Sony.

Overall Rating: 1/5 stars

Author's Review

I bought the SanDisk memory stick because I thought that it would be a cheaper option than the Sony. Boy was I wrong...

When I would use the stick in the SanDisk memory card reader and put it back in my Sony camera I would ALWAYS get a formatting error (I would then have to format it on my camera). This is a BIG problem when you've left some images on the stick because they will be gone.

My last and final incidence with this was after taking very important pictures, I went to transfer them and they were gone. I emailed SanDisk's technical support and it took them over 15 days just to get back to me. When they did they didn't even answer any of my questions that I originally sent, just said if you are still having problems email us back. So I did, I told them about my experience. Their response, sorry for the delay, we are working on getting our response time back to 48 hours or less. No apologizes for the problems that I had or the time or money I spent fixing it.

We had to buy very expensive recovery software and spent hours messing with it. We then had to spend time with refunds/returns, etc. It was a big pain.

I have since bought the Sony brand and have not had one problem. I realize that the Sony brand is a few bucks more, but you will be much happier. Also if you do have problems, you can call Sony directly and ask them for assistance. They will be able to help you because you bought the Sony memory stick for the Sony camera. Otherwise, if you are using another brand (SanDisk or Lexar) they won't be able to help you.

Check out the SanDisk's Technical support site and search under FAQ's for Memory stick. There is an article there about why is my card corrupt. There are 13 symptoms (5 of which I had a problem with in less than 10 days of use)!

- Card works in camera but not the reader
- Card shows corrupt characters
- Card shows used capacity but no files are on it
- Card locks camera up
- Card does not work in device while other compatible cards do
- Card can not be written to or erased
- Reader or adapter crashes when card is inserted but works fine with other cards
- Card show card error in camera
- Card says it needs to be formatted when inserted in device or reader
- Shows less available pictures than normal and no pictures on card
- Card shows bad sectors in scandisk
- Camera can not be turned off with card inserted
- Card shows wrong capacity when formatting

I do hope this helps some of you who are debating which brand of memory stick to buy. I hope I can help prevent someone else having to go through the problems I had to.
