Author's Review
Update: I've used the device multiple times now to free pictures off my digital camera and it works fantastic. The push-button feature still works great and makes it easy to transfer files in a jiff. It has worked fantastic on my older FinePix 2650 and my new Powershot S2IS. I have updated this post in regards to the deletion issue.
I have only owned this device for a few days, however I am incredibly impressed. We purchased this device as somehow the USB connection on the inside of our FujiFilm Finepix 2650 stopped functioning properly. We had just been on vacation to Seattle and Vancouver and wanted to remove the pictures off the camera without spending a fortune at a camera store to download them off the xD card.
I found this device at on on-line retailer with a good price and combined with another purchase, free shipping. I paid $15 for it, however you can find similar devices in camera shops or big box stores for $20+.
The device is USB 2.0 (up to 480 Mbps per second), is quick as a flash, comes with its own cable and can read SD, MultiMediaCard, Memory Stick, Memory Stick Pro and xD. There is a CD in the packaging (be very careful when opening it, with scissors or box cutter, as we made some nice slashes on the CD as we didn't know it was in the middle there). Installing the CD allows for super-fast quick downloads.
You push a button on the device and you are immediately asked to browse for a folder to save to. You are also able to create a new folder through the software, which was a great feature. Average download time for over 70 pictures on an xD was less than two minutes. However, the one quirk, if you want to delete the pictures off the card, you need to check this box before it downloads. My only concern is that if there is a problem with the download, the pictures are erased. Would be nice if you could select this somehow after you download.
We did not want to have to buy a new digital camera as we still get good use from the old one but were stuck with no card space and no way to get pictures off the card. This reader may not be great if you are traveling and don't have a computer with you, however if you need to get pictures off your card, or have friends who stay at your home with different cards and want to free up space on their card, is a great purchase!
