Voice Synthesizer Volume Control

by   raymondzachary ,   Jun 7, 2008

Pros:  All key functions work well. Operations is reasonable. Extended life battery available. Looks/feels good.

Cons:  Name synthesizing volume is too low relative to other volume performance.

The Bottom Line:  Buy with reservations. See Review

Overall Rating: 3/5 stars

Author's Review

This phone was purchased as a replacement for an LG Chocolate under Verizon's 30 day trade in policy. It is better than the Choclolate in the regard I will discuss but it is still inadequate.

When one is using bluetooth and the phone says "Say a Command" a typical response is "Call Sharon Mobile". The Reply is "Did you say, 'Call Sharon Mobile?'"
With the Gleam, the words "Did you say, Call?" and "Mobile" come back audible and clear. The word "Sharon" or whatever name you are calling is almost inaudible. This is a problem with the processing of the names in the Contacts List and is likely a software problem or a firmware problem.

I presented this problem to Samsung and they admit to it. They said it would be in the neighborhood of November before the software fix is ready for distribution.

The phone otherwise is a good product. If you don't live in a State like California where bluetooth is required and you generally use the phone indoors the problem is less severe since the signal to noise ratio on weak voice commands is better. I would recommend getting a different phone but that may be an unreasonable gamble as this problem appears in both LG and Samsung and may be in all cell phones. For example, suppose the same software module is being used by a lot of manufacturers. You could be swapping phones for the rest of you days.

As for me I will wait for Samsung to fix their software and try to outguess the system when it talks to me. There is a work around I have discovered. If one says call 555-1212 that gets processed differently and is fully audible. It is only names which are problematic.
