Author's Review
I Couldn't find any reviews on this product prior to purchase, so I thought I'd leave my opinion. I have the samsung DVD-HD841, now I hear there's difference in black levels between this and the HD-931

heres a nice article to reference. A buddy has a Bravo which he spent 300 on, and from reading reviews (internet, dvd magazine, and personal reference), there not too much of a difference (visually) between this player and the samsung. The samsung also plays any region, which is a nice perk, and plays SACD's which the more expensive Bravo does not. The difference between 1080i, and the regular 480p modes: there is a difference, 1080i is crisper. Is it the jump I thought it would be? No, but it is noticeably sharper. During motion, it is also a little more blurred ( because its interlace instead of progressive, progressive produces better images when theres motion involved because of the way the screen is drawn)but this again is being picky...but hey if your upgrading from a regular dvd player to an hd dvd player your probably interested in the little improvements and minor setbacks. The samsung also has a 720p mode, that is a step up from 480p, and shows motion better. All in all I am pleased, is it worth the 185$? Sure, but you'd be better off waiting a month or 2 an trying to get one for 140 if you can, its more of a deal at that price, and easier to talk your wife into :) The tv I have the samsung hooked up to is a sony 40 inch HD XBR tube, about 2 years old, and it has one of the most beautiful pictures I have seen on any tv, and I mean plasmas, lcds, whatever( yeah yeah its 4:3). I also have HD cable, to compare the samsung playback to.
Nice clean styling, and cool blue backlighting to the power button, relatively cheap compared to other models, crappy range on the remote, even with new batteries.I programmed my stereo remote to take over...problem solved.
