Good video, marginal audio
Date of Review: Jul 25, 2006
The Bottom Line: I do recommend the Samsung DVD-L70 based on the excellent video quality. Those purchasing it for airline use may want to consider other options.
Other reviews have gone into details about the specifications and features of the unit, so I will confine my comments to my observations.
Background
I purchased the Samsung DVD-L70 for use during air travel. I wanted something that would be small enough to place on an airline tray table. The DVD player has been used almost exclusively with a pair of Solitude electronic noise canceling headphones.
Video
Crisp and clear as one can expect from a 7" screen. Definitely superior to lower priced models. I have not observed any distortion of the video, and the color and contrast it what I would expect for a display in this price range.
Audio
Quite underpowered. I am not an audiophile, and I certainly did not expect much. However even with a pair of noise canceling headphones, the volume was just at the bare minimum at which one could hear dialog during movies, on an airplane. That was with the volume control on both the DVD player and the headphones at maximum. In a relatively quiet environment (home, car) the volume level through headphones would be OK. But it is just barely adequate in an airplane. I am confident that the problem lies with the DVD player, as I tested the headphones with other audio sources, and volume was no issue.
Features
Most all the features one would need in a simple, portable DVD player are there. One thing that is curiously absent (or at least I have not found it) is a battery charge indicator. There is no way to know if the battery is charged, or how much play time is remaining. The DVD just stops abruptly when the power runs out.
