Samsung LN52A650A 52 in. HDTV LCD TV.
Date of Review: Aug 15, 2008
The Bottom Line: I think It will be a good T.V. that may be a little bit future proof.
I bought this T.V after reading tons of reviews, I finally found it on sale for a very good price.Pulled the T.V. out of the box,the stand is already attached. The T.V. does swivel on the stand, which I found as a positive and a negative. It's nice to swivel to get access to to the back panel, but when the dog runs by the t.v.it tends to turn a tad each day....
It has 4 HDMI plug ins,1 on the side,3 on the back,Two composite video inputs ( 1 side,1 back),an S video connection (side),P.C. input( on back),1 coaxial input, and a USB Port (on the side, which is referred to as Wiselink)...I found when using the S video cable, you lose one of your composite inputs. You have to use the red,and white cables to get the sound. The other little quirk I ran into,my old T.V. the panel where all the connections, and the side hook ups were on the left, this one they are on the right (standing behind the T.V.).I did have to replace a couple of cords,to make sure they were long enough to reach the new plug ins...
The selling feature that sold me,was the 120 hertz refresh rate, which is supposed to help blur, and tearing while watching sports and fast action.I watch more standard definition television, where the this feature might also be very helpful in improving the the picture quality. The 120 hertz refresh setting can be found in one of the menus, and can be adjusted to wards what type of programming you are watching.I read in a lot of of the product reviews, that people complained about When this setting is turned to high, that the picture tend to be very un-natural.I've found the setting of medium does a wonderful job,on most everything I watch. While it's not perfect,it does help, and I do notice it more when I turn it off..
This one of many features this T.V has,It has a built in channel guide, for over the air HD content,a built in over the air HD tuner (ATSC/QAM/NTSC integrated tuners),Live weather, sports, and stocks (when connected to the internet)...I had problems with my old T.V. and this internal HD tuner,This one seems to work a lot better, giving a good quality signal, even during very windy,or inclement weather.
The T.V. has great viewing angles (178 degrees by 178 degrees) The glare is the biggest problem when viewing at a wider angle.I've not noticed a bad fade,or blacks turning to purples at wider viewing angles.
I jumped from a 56" DLP T.V. to this one...The picture was tons brighter, and more clear. It was amazingly bright, even watching darker movies.I had to turn down the brightness,it lights up the whole room like a spot light.
I did get the Picture in picture to work, unfortunately it's buried in one of the setting menus. There isn't a button on the remote to get to the PIP.The PIP feature does have a few different settings,as to the secondary pictures size, location, and channel. They are all buried,in the settings menu, after you turn on the PIP feature. So I feel like the PIP is not going to be a great use, especially because it's going to be hard to switch back and forth.I am sort of disappointed with this,I use this especially during football season.
The on screen menus are OK,not wonderful,it seems like everything is buried. It takes a little thumbing around t get to all the settings. There are many adjustments for for picture Quality, and color settings. 3 different picture modes (standard, dynamic, and Movie),You can adjust the individual colors, sharpness contrast, brightness, back light,Cool/warm/standard, many things I'm not smart enough to figure out.For the average user is really overkill, but great for the video, and audio files.
I've not had a problem with the remote,It works fine.I've read a lot of complaints about the scroll wheel navigation.I find the buttons tend to feel solid, some remotes the buttons tend to have that floating feeling. the Remote has a back light feature on the remote which makes the buttons light up,which can be turned off ,so it wont eat your batteries. The remote has good size to it,but still light, and not extremely awkward to use.It does take a reading of the manual,to figure out what all the buttons on the Remote do.They are somewhat well labeled, good size and tend to be grouped fairly well grouped.
My biggest problems have been that the Bezel with the touch of color is extremely high gloss balck..the slightest piece of dust shows up from across the room, and it's a dust magnet.
Also,That I had to upgrade everything else...The better the source in,the better the picture quality.I had to upgrade my Satellite receiver, and DVD player...The standard definitions stuff didn't look good, and even with the 120htz,there was some "tearing" I solved that by getting a high def Sat. Receiver, and HDMI cables to connect it...The Tearing was dramatically reduced...and Was able to turn the 120 htz refresh rate down....
I don't use the speakers on the T.V. most reviews I've read, they aren't good,a Surround sound system is a must...
I've owned it for about 3 weeks now...I've had no major issues with it...
****Update***
The T.V. has had a great picture, was meant for high definition, and a Blue ray player,or HD content is definitely worth it.
The bad side a year later,I have the repair man coming today. Two days ago, I hit the power button on the T.V.,it started clicking, the picture would flash, then turn itself off. I had to unplug the T.V. to get it to stop doing this,no amount of hitting the power button on the remote would help.Knowing I'm right about at the end of my manufacture warranty, I called Samsung customer service. They told me to download the firmware update, put it on a thumb drive, and that will update the firmware, problem solved.I made sure the firmware update was applied correctly. It solved the problem for one day,the next morning, I tried to turn the T.V. on,the same thing.
#2 I don't use the 120 htz much at all,it was a great selling feature, but when I used it on things that weren't sports,or high action it seem to make the picture worse at times. (especially in standard definition) More tearing of the picture, jittery on simple Long camera pans,or scenes where someone is just walking down the street, and the camera is following them.I've maybe used it a handful of times in the past year watching sports.
#3 The Dust,it's like a huge dust magnet for hairballs, dust bunnies on the super shiny finish.Being so shiny, after about two days it looks like someone used a table saw next to it.
