Author's Review
I have worked for a corporate Verizon Wireless store for more then two years and in that time there have only been four phones that I have tried to talk every customer out of, and the Glyde happens to be one of them.
The Samsung SCH-U940, a.k.a The Glyde, is the first attempt by Samsung to join in on the touch screen phone bandwagon. Props for making a great looking phone, but maybe a little more effort should have been put into the touch screen performance.
The design of the phone is very stylish. Just over four inches long and two inches wide it is a nice size phone that will easily fit in your pocket or purse or wherever it is that you carry your phone. The color of the phone is a dark navy blue with a slight shine to the phone. The QWERTY key board slides out to the left side and has larger buttons making it very nice for texting or typing any information on the phone. Overall the appearance of this phone is very nice.
The touch screen on the phone is where it all goes downhill. Since about the middle of August I have seen this phone come back to my store with problems on average of three to four times a day. The touch screen in the number one problem on the phone. Most often with the touch screen it becomes unresponsive. It also has a tendency to not select the part of the screen you are touching. This is very frustrating because it makes it so that people have an extremely hard time dialing for calls, or sometimes even answering a phone call is not possible.
This phone has had more then five software updates come out since it's release in the summer of 2008, all of which have been pushed out to fix the touch screen. The bad part about this is that when a customer comes into the store with their phone not working we are required to push the new software onto the phone to see if it will fix the problem before we, as employees, are allowed to replace out your phone. We are also only allowed to replace out the phone for the exact same phone, so chances are that you will continue to have the same problems with your new phone.
The battery life on the phone lasts on average for one full day. This is with minimal use of the phone though. If the touch screen is used frequently the battery will drain much faster and often times you will need to charge it again before nighttime.
Bottom line if you want a touch screen phone from Verizon Wireless, don't go with this phone. It is not worth the money to have so many problems. Unless you like visiting your local store once a month or more then I guess go ahead.
