Samsung 1150 parent of Samsung 115? Both excellent cameras

Date of Review: Dec 7, 2000

My opinion: I highly recommend the Samsung Evoca 115.

I believe, the older version and parent of the Samsung Evoca 115, is the Samsung Slim Zoom 1150. They seem to be one and the same except the body design is a little different on the 1150. It is more like their Evoca 70E, 35-70 zoom camera body style.

When I purchased mine for myself as a Mothers Day present for myself, a little over five years ago at Walmart's they only had the two Samsung cameras, the 1150 with the 38-115 zoom lens and the 70 with the 35-70 zoom lens. I paid approximately the same price for the Samsung Slim Zoom 1150 with the Panoramas mode, as the Samsung Evoca 115 is selling for. Mine came with a camera bag that I always keep both my camera and instruction booklet in.

I have had nothing but fantastic pictures from this camera. I like it because it is small enough to keep in my pocket book all of the time. It goes everywhere with me. One never knows when that great opportunity comes along when one wishes they have a camera with them. I am able to do this with my Samsung Slim Zoom 1150. I haven't missed those "precious moments" when my camera came in handy, because of it being in my pocket book.

Before I purchased this camera, I used manual 35mm SLR cameras that were bulky and I needed a camera bag larger than my pocketbook to carry everything in, along with a couple of lenses. I was over fifty when I bought the Samsung 35mm camera and gave up my 35mm SLR cameras.

Carrying the SLR got to be a pain in the neck. When my offsprings were younger, I did sports photography, covering the different sports that they participated in. The SLR was good for that. I used the manual focusing type in those days. Now, with the boys grown up, I don't do that kind of photography work anymore. Actually, that is why I like the zoom lens on the Samsung model that I now use.

I'm more into scenic photography. I didn't carry my bulky SLR's around with me all of the time because of their bulkiness. Plus the tripod or the monopod, too. I also had a 1000 watt light setup, backdrops and all of that stuff. It's all retired and most of it I disposed of. I only had it with me when I knew I was going to take sports portrait or action pictures.

Times have changed since those days. So have the reasons I use a camera changed too. That is why my Samsung camera is the perfect camera for me.
One of these days, I plan to buy a backup camera to have on hand. It will be a Samsung.

I've been looking at the one of theirs, with the zoom lens that goes up to 140. Now, being sixty years old, retirement is just around the corner and, I'd like to do some traveling. I'm sold on Samsung cameras from the experience that I have had with my Samsung Slim Zoom 1150, the picture quality and all of the features this camera has.

I am going to list all of the specifications of my older camera, the Samsung Slim Zoom. The newer one, the Samsung Evoca 115, seem to have the same. I went to Samsung's web page and requested the literature on their Evoca 115, 38-115 35mm zoom lens camera. When I receive it in the mail (snail's mail) and if there is any difference in the specifications, I'll be back here to make any necessary changes.

The one thing my camera doesn't have is the date stamp on it. If it did have that, I wouldn't use that feature, because, to me, that ruins scenic photos. I would crop that out of a photo. I believe one has the option of using it or not using that feature on the newer cameras.

I've displayed my photos over the years, and to me, that is just one feature I don't like. Other people have their own opinions on that. I leave that to them.

I keep my negatives in the wrappers from the photo processing labs, where the dates are on the outside of the envelopes. I put my photos in albums and frames and the like. I put ID numbers on them when I do that, which brings me back to my original envelope, when I remove the photos from their envelopes.

SO, WHEN SOMEONE SAYS THE SAMSUNG CAMERAS ARE "LOADED" THEY MEAN IT.
MINE ALSO DOES PANORAMA, WHICH CAN BE USED MID-ROLL. Mine also came with a black cloth carrying case that can be used with either the shoulder strap or for attaching to a belt. It is padded. Looks like a heavy nylon and still looks new, like the day I bought my camera. It has a front pocket for storing the manual in. Both compartments close by zippers.

The manual, along with listing all of the specifications, tells step by step how to use the features with diagrams and example photos. It is well illustrated. It has two sections. Half of the booklet is in English and the other half is in Spanish. The back cover gives the addresses in the United States and other countries.

I change my batteries once a year, around Mothers Day.

Samsung has their own web-site for anymore information. You can contact them directly via e-mail, too from their web site.

Their cameras are moderately priced. I'd say that the cameras are for the amateurs as well as the professionals. They have a large selection of them to choose from. They've came a long way from when I purchased mine. Walmart only had the two models when I purchased mine. Now, they have more of a selection.

Mine is easy to operate. For the novice, they have those step-by-step instructions in their manual. I know, I repeated that. But, it is important for anyone not familiar with all of those features or for the beginner.

There isn't anything bad that I can say about my camera at all. I have been very pleased with mine. Because I keep mine in the carrying case, it still looks like it is brand new, even though I've had it for over five years. My camera also has a carrying strap attatched to it (like a heavy-duty shoe strings) that is adjustable with a sliding plastic gizmo about three quarters of an inch long by a half of an inch wide. Like the western-style ties that go with the cowboys outfits.

So, to sum it all up, if you are looking for a simple point and shoot camera that is loaded with a lot of extras and light-weight, that takes excellent photos, I would go for one of the Samsung models. Their Evoca 115, I believe is identical to my Slim Zoom 1150 with the panorama mode.

Myself, I like using the 400 ISO film or for dim light, I use the 800 ISO film in my Samsung camera. I don't go over eight by twelve inches in size for enlargements and find this film perfect for that.

Rarely, I'll have the photos done up larger. With todays modern technology and the use of computers for poster size, I have no fears of using these faster speed 35mm ISO films in my Samsung camera. When I did some work for a newspaper, they would give me the 400 ISO film over fifteen years ago, and I just continued using it to this day.
