Not the one if you actually want to watch TV

Date of Review: Jun 3, 2005

The Bottom Line:  Maybe okay as a monitor, but not suitable as a TV. Remote control is beyond cheap.
I ordered a Samsung 710MP to serve as a TV in our kitchen, with the plan that the 13" Sony currently there would migrate to the guest bedroom. I had no plans to use the Samsung as a computer monitor. It arrived yesterday, and it is a neat, clean design. The remote is a tiny cheap-looking and feeling item. The owners manual comes on a cd. After figuring out how to set it up (including a call to my cable company to find out which of four cable types to choose), it worked, sort of. the controls for setup are not particularly intuitive, but with trial and error and a trip to read the cd, it was not difficult to get it set up and to have it automatically add the channels that are on our cable. I noted that there is a fine tuning choice on the setup. However, even with fine tuning adjustments, the TV picture was fuzzy on all channels. The presence of a fine tuning control suggests it has an analog tuner without automatic fine tuning. This, coupled with the poor picture, suggest that the tuner is a 19 cent chip. It is going back today.
