Stay Outta My Oven ~ Safety 1st Oven Front Lock

MY son is mischievous.  Our response has always been locks and gates.  There is the gate between the kitchen and living room, the lock on the refrigerator, the lock on the door, the latches on the cabinets, an extra gate, and a C-lock on the cabinet in the bathroom.  It feels like lock-down around here, but at least I know my little guy is a little bit safer and I am only mildly inconvenienced.

The Safety 1st Oven Front Lock is a lock we added to our oven when my son really started roaming the house on the own. This was after he learned to climb the gates and his access to the kitchen was really opened up. The stove/oven has always be a point of contention with me, because I never wanted my son to be comfortable even touching the stove (on or off). When I realized he could open the oven door on his own, I elected to search for a lock for the door and found this one.

To install the lock you prep the area on the oven where the sticky part of the lock will go on. This is an area about 2 inches by less than one inch. I think the best method is to use alcohol to ensure the area is clean and the tape will stick well. You then peel a backing off of the sticky area and firmly press it. The sticky area is put on the top edge of the top of the door and then the lock hangs down over the front of the oven.

The lock can be undone by pushing the lever to the right and pulling up. The one thing I was worried about was the lock getting to hot. I've found that this is not an issue at all and I have never noticed the surface of the lock hot, at all. Another problem some people may have is space for the lock. One our oven there is barely enough space between the lock at the very top of the door and the handle. If your handle is high, this lock may not work for you.

My son is nearing three years old and this lock is still fulfilling its purpose, so it has definitely been worth the $3 investment. Since it was applied we have not had any issues with the adhesive not being strong enough and my son has never figured out quite how to unlock it.

Overall I would highly recommend this lock to anyone worried about their toddler getting into the oven. It has worked very well for us and continues to perform well.
