Pros:  Inexpensive; Prevent toddlers from wandering into different rooms

Cons:  Snapping device can wear out; Small opening in front

The Bottom Line:  These door knobs are inexpensive and easy to install. They have a few drawbacks, but they are still very useful.

Overall Rating: 4/5 stars

Author's Review

Are you a parent of curious toddlers? If you are, then you know that little children can get themselves in lots of trouble if they are permitted to exercise their curiosity at any given moment. It is easy to keep kids confined in certain parts of the house and keep them away from the most dangerous items in the house. But with other things, a helping hand is certainly needed because it is next to impossible to keep an eye on a baby every second of every day. One product designed to provide that extra hand is Safety 1st Clear Grip Door Knob Covers, a device that keeps toddlers in designated rooms.

Basic Facts About This Product:

Safety 1st Clear Grip Door Knob Covers are plastic covers shaped like a door knob and designed to fit around a standard door knob. The knobs are frosted white in color with round, plastic grip tabs on opposite sides that are used by older kids and parents to open doors.

Assembly of Safety 1st Clear Grip Door Knob Covers is easy. The plastic covers are actually comprised of two pieces joined on the sides by snapping in place. To attach to a doorknob, the plastic covers must first be unsnapped to separate into two pieces. Each piece is then placed around the doorknob and snapped back into place. The covers are now in place and ready to use. To open a door with the covers in place, all one has to do is squeeze the plastic grip tabs and turn like normal. By squeezing, the plastic doorknob covers will grip the doorknob, allowing it to turn like normal.

Final Thoughts:

Safety First Clear Grip Door Knob Covers are a good product for any household and they are invaluable in a parent’s efforts to keep children safe and sound. We started buying these door knob covers about a year ago when our oldest child reached the age of about 15 months. Before this point, she either could not reach the door knobs or she didn’t have any interest in finding out what was behind the door in front of her. Once she learned how easy it was to turn a door knob and how many cool things could be discovered on the other side, it was time for mom and dad to take quick and decisive action.

Safety First Clear Grip Door Knobs provide a simple, inexpensive way to stop toddlers from entering into the rooms of their choosing and we have these knobs installed on several doors, including the door to the bathroom, front door, back door, and garage door. My oldest girl’s initial reaction to the door knobs was humorous (she kept asking why the door was “stuck”) but she has now grown to accept them and she doesn’t fight them. She knows she cannot open a door with one of these knobs installed and she has given up trying.

These door knobs offer good protection from toddler disappearance but there are a few qualities that I wish were different. First, the two- piece construction doesn’t always hold up the way it should. Because the two pieces snap into place, there is a chance the snaps will lose their effectiveness and, with enough tugging by a baby, they will pop off the door handle. I have reached to grip one of these and had it fall off, so I know that the snap isn’t always secure. However, as long as my little girls do not learn this, we should be fine. If and when they learn how to pry the snaps loose, we will have to abandon these and try something else, but by the time that happens, they will likely also be able to press the tabs on the Safety First Door Knobs and open the door in the usual manner anyway. So, these knobs should work for the duration.

One other slight annoyance with Safety First Clear Grip Door Knob Covers is the small opening in front. This opening is intended to allow the parent or older child a means to lock or unlock a door (on those doors that have a lock on front of the door knob, like front doors often do), without having to remove the door knob cover. The problem is that the opening is quite small. Unless you have very small fingers and/or a large, easy to grip locking device on your door knob, you may very well have to remove the Safety First Clear Grip Door Knob Cover to accomplish this task.

Overall, Safety 1st Clear Grip Door Knob Covers are a very good product and they are very useful in the prevention of wandering toddler syndrome. They are also very economical, with a two- pack selling for only about $2.50. They aren’t necessarily the most attractive safety device, but they get the job done, protecting little children from themselves and lending a helping hand to parents who already have their hands full.
