Author's Review

About a month ago, while doing my Daddy duties (child proofing the house). I picked up a three pack of Safety 1st Clear Grip Door knob Covers.

What are Door Knob Covers?
A door knob cover is a plastic attachment that you place on a rounded or cone –like door handle. They are designed to prevent children from opening doors to places where they aren’t permitted to go. This product is not for a lever door handle. There are different devices for doors with that style handle.

Tell me more about them?
When I purchased the Safety 1st Clear Grip Door Knob Covers, they came in a three pack for about five dollars. They come assembled so you must take them apart to be able to place them on a door knob that needs protection.
In my opinion, the best way to describe what one looks like is like this:

Think of a hollow ball. Now compress one end of it and elongate the other end a little. Cut off the end of the elongated side. Now drill a whole through the middle of the compressed side to the elongated side. Next cut the thing down the middle creating two mirror image halves. On each half, cut a “U” into the middle to create buttons. At the bottom of the “U” shape buttons, add some rubber to both the inside and outside of the shell. This will be used to grip the door knob when you desire to open the door. Finally, put the halves back together to create a door knob cover. Another thing you can do, to get an idea of what this looks like, is to look at the picture at the top of this review. I am sure that will give you the exact image of what this looks like.
Now that I have taken up your time on the appearance of this device, let’s move on.

How do they work?
They are really easy to attach to the door. First you must take one apart. At the seams of both halves, there are two locks, simply push at the locks and pull the halves apart. This may require some strength. Now take the two halves and place them around the door handle, and put them back together. Now the door is protected form your child being able to pen the door (that is until they figure out how this works and that he/she has the strength to operate the door cover).

To open the door, push on the rubber parts of the two buttons. Push hard so that the inside of the button makes contact with the door handle. Once contact is made, you can turn the door handle.

Some door knobs have locks on them. The hole on the front, compressed side, gives you access to that lock. To get to it you must stick your finger in the hole to work the lock. Sometimes this is not the easiest thing to do. Most of us are use to using our thumbs and a finger to do this. With the cover, you have to give up using your thumb. This makes manipulating the lock much harder.
In a nut shell, that is how this door knob cover works.

What do you think of it?

I really like the Safety 1st Clear Grip Door Knob Covers. It does what it is designed to do. It keeps my daughter from being able to open several of the doors in my home. I know she is safe form dangers that lurk behind the protected doors.
If you are my mother-in-law you may not really like them. She watches my daughter several times a week. I had one of the covers on the door to the garage. She found that trying to unlock the door to be very hard. I had to remove the cover from that door so that she can access the garage if needed.
As far as my wife goes, she told me that she hated them.

Conclusion
Overall I like the Safety 1st Clear Grip Door Knob Covers. With them I k now my daughter will not be able to get beyond the doors that they are on. Such a simple device helps give me piece of mind when it comes to safety.
