Author's Review
I am training my second child on this seat and I think it is a great potty seat because it is very reasonably priced, it works and doesn't have any bells and whistles. We paid around $13 for it, and it currently retails around $15 in many stores.
Both of my children started training sometime after the age of two, and neither trained very quickly, my point being that we use the little potty for lengthy periods of time. The first nice feature is that the lid raises and lowers very easily and stays in place while they are on the potty. The opening to the removable container is the right size as well. Big enough so that we don't have accidents, but small enough so that they don't fall in. The height also seems perfect for my kids and they are very much of an average size for their ages.
After they have used the potty, the top half of the potty lifts up and a container with a spout and a handle is easily removed. A mild warning - my kids learned quickly that was how Mommy emptied the potty and they wanted to do it themselves and we had spillage. However, this is not a design flaw with the potty. My only true complaint about this feature is there are lots of crack and crevices within the design of the potty's interior, and those small spaces seem to catch some splashes that I cannot easily clean. But an occasional hot washing under the tub spout seems to take care of most of the spillage.
It is easy to reassemble after emptying. Sometimes the top half of the potty doesn't fit perfectly when you set it back down, but it is easily remedied by lifting up again and replacing it. Again, there are no sound effects or buttons to push, so the process is very simple. It also allows the child to concentrate on the task at hand - going potty.
I have trained a girl on it and am now training a boy. The cup attachment for a boy does not really stay in place very well. I have tried to get my little guy on it before the attachment falls down, but he has been able to compensate and knows exactly how to sit down and pull the attachment up. It would be nice if it remained upright better. But if you are purchasing this for a girl, I had no such complaints.
The other element of this potty seat that I really like is that when your child graduates to the big potty, but isn't really tall enough to get up by themselves the bottom of the potty flips over and you can use it as a step stool. The step stool part is also light enough that if your child wants to use it at the sink it is very easy for them to use. In fact, this was the only step stool we had for the first few months after my first was completely potty trained and it worked great. Using it as a step stool also did not appear to do any damage to the potty itself as we have not found any cracks or broken parts.
The handles on the sides appeared useless to me, but that is how my son gets on and off the potty. He uses them to shift himself around to either get comfortable or to adjust for the aforementioned problem with the cup.
We love this potty most of all because it has not broken, we have used it through two children and it was extremely inexpensive. And as I mentioned before, its simplicity allows the child to concentrate on what they need to do. And the lack of special features, noises and music allows me to positively reinforce with encouragement successful trips to the potty. Most of all, my kids have liked it and that is what matters to me.
