Author's Review

Welcoming our baby in our home, meant welcoming diapers. Of course, we could never welcome the smell. We first chose to just use a small, kitchen size trash can with a lid. We would simply push the foot pedal of the trash can and toss the diapers. I started to notice that the bag of diapers didn't go out as often as needed. The trash can was not gonna be emptied until it was full. In my husband's words, "It can still hold 3 more diapers." I thought this to be unsanitary, and it just plain out drove me insane. I started using smaller trash bags so that he would empty the can more often. This worked up until my two large dogs decided that dumping over the trash can was a delight. After cleaning up over 20 diapers that they had dumped out, I knew this was the last straw. I marched on in to Walmart in search for a diaper pail.

Here is what I was looking for:

*A pail that would be unable to open by both my dogs and children.

*A pail that would be easy to open. As we all know, mother's have their hands full more than all the time.

*A pail that used normal trash bags. I do not want to have to worry if Walmart or my local grocery will carry certain bags. I also don't want to worry about spending 10 dollars for 5 bags.

*I of course wanted a pail that would at least try to eliminate odors. Now I said try. It isn't possible to totally eliminate an odor from any body waste. Being that I breast feed, smell has rarely been a problem anyway.

*I was looking for a pail that would have to be emptied often. This would certainly cut down on the smell. This means that my husband must take out the bag more often than every two weeks! Now that is what I want! I just can't stand the fact that diapers may be sitting and growing things on them.

*I want something simple. I do mean simple. I don't want to have to take ten things apart to replace a bag. I don't want to lift the lid, open a compartment, press another button, close the lid back, lock it, and then have to press another button. I just want to be able to lift the lid, hand the bag to my husband, place another bag in, close the top and be done with it.

After examining 4 or 5 different pails, I decided!
Safety 1st Odorless Diaper Pail had a home!

It had all the features that I was looking for and I am thoroughly pleased!

Before I continue with this review, please let me say that this pail isn't odorless. It minimizes odors and doesn't completely eliminate them. As I sad before, you can't expect it to. This is waste you are putting into a plastic bag. Of course it is gonna smell. It smelled when it went in the pail, it isn't going to stop smelling.

Can the dogs or Children get into the Safety 1st Odorless Diaper Pail?

Nope! They sure can't. The opening for diapers is opened by a push button. When the button is pressed the top flips up and there is enough room for a diaper to go in. Inside the opening there are two pieces of plastic. When a diaper is pushed against these two pieces of plastic, they open up. This allows the diaper to go in, yet no diapers can come out. No more worries about the dogs! As for the children, there also is no problem. They in fact can push the button to open the diaper entrance. They can't take off the entire lid though. The lid has a safety lock. The lock is on the inside of the opening, so it is unseen. You have to press firmly to make this open. If the pail falls over, you don't have to worry about the top coming off because this feature will keep it closed.

Can I open this pail with one hand?

Sure I can! As said before, you just push the button and the lid pops open. The button is large enough that you don't have to search for it in the dark. It is easily pressed. It isn't one of those buttons that you have to press all the way in. Just a touch will make it open! With my little one on my hip, brush and purse in hand, I just press the button and push the diaper in. Then I simply push the lid back down and Viola!

Do I have to search for expensive bags that can only be used for the Safety 1st Odorless Diaper Pail?

Certainly not. A 15 gallon trash bag is all you need. I use the scented trash bags. These come in bags of 100, are inexpensive, and fit just perfect. I place the roll in the bottom of the pail for the next use. You don't have to worry about a separate box of expensive diaper pail bags that has to be kept on a shelf possibly out of reach. Convenience is what a mother needs! It makes life so much easier on us all.

How often does the Safety 1st Odorless Diaper Pail need to be emptied?

I personally like it to be emptied every two days. The pail actually hold up to 24 diapers. Depending on how many diapers your baby uses a day and what size your baby uses will determine how often it needs to be emptied. As a newborn my little one usually went through 8 diapers a day. With the newborn and size one diapers being so small, we could have let it go for 3-4 days. As babies get older, they don't soil their diapers as much. You could possible let is go for 4-5 days.

Does the Safety 1st Odorless Diaper Pail minimize or eliminate odors?

I personally haven't ever had a problem with the smell. After reading a few opinions I realize that many people have. Under the flip top lid, there is a compartment for deodorizing smells. This is a small yellow disk in a plastic bag. To replace this, you press two sides in and throw in a disk. It is recommended to be changed monthly or when you notice a foul smell. Being that I use the scented bags, I discard the bags often, and use the scented disk, I haven't had a problem with smell. I replaced the disk with a stick up. I didn't particularly care for the baby powder scent that the disk gave. I replace my stick ups when I smell that the scent is wearing off. My friend gave me some advice about the smell if there was any. She places a small amount of baking soda in a tiny mesh like bag. The baking soda absorbs much of the odor. If any of you do notice a foul smell, I am sure this would help.

The flip up top, and the entire lid are sealed tight. This keeps the odors inside the pail if there are any. Once the old bag of diapers are removed, there surely shouldn't be a smell. I have noticed many times that when a diaper comes in contact with the 'claw piece', some of the soiled diaper will rub on this piece. This of course could cause an odor. This plastic piece is removable and washable. My advice to keep this from happening is to wrap the diaper tightly before placing it in the Safety 1st Odorless Diaper Pail

Is the Safety 1st Odorless Diaper Pail simple and easy?

Most definitely. If it weren't, I wouldn't still have it. I am known as the one with little patience and it has pleased me. To change the bag, you just lift up on a white tab, pull the plastic piece that allows the diapers to fall in, take the bag out and replace. The plastic piece the allows the diapers to go in, is much like a claw. Pressure causes it to open. You then replace this piece over the bag and close the top.

After 3 months of that dreaded trash can, I bought this wonderful pail. I couldn't be more satisfied! It has held up through many diapers. All the pieces are still in tact. It is small enough to put anywhere.
