Psycho thriller!

Long before Psycho was even a twinkle in Hitchcock's eye, or the subtle horror of Rear Window was ink on paper, there was Rope. A magnificent character study, in real time, of the warped logic of two psychology students as they morbidly choke their "inferior" class mate, hide his body in a trunk, and proceed to have a dinner party with his friends and family using the trunk as the centerpiece. Of course the story is wonderful, and the acting magnificent(Stewart never ceases to amaze when coupled with Hitch), but Alfred Hitchcock deserves all the credit.
Technically, Rope is the epitomy of perfection. Instead of cutting to close ups and long shots, Hitchcock surveys the action from an ahead of it's time, steadicam, that follows the action and character's around throughout the apartment, foregoing several cuts, only switching camera angles every seven minutes or so(seeing as how the magazines only held 8 minutes of film. Had they held more, I'm sure Hitch would have made them longer), to give you a sort of "third person" feel.
Another of the technical marvels was the New York City skyline as seen through the bay windows of one room of the house, and how it went from late afternoon, to sunset, to nighttime. Shot on a soundstage, the backdrop's coloring was changed slightly for each of the seven minute runs, to appear as if it was getting later in the day. The result is an unparalleled realistic realtime sunset and nightfall. Hitch is incredible.
Infamous Hitchcock, ever challenging the lines of acceptability (case in point with his graphic murder in the beginning), does not let us down in this wonderful masterpiece.
