Not as good as PSX RRs
Date of Review: Mar 2, 2000
You've heard the hype that this game rocks and rules better than the PSX versions of Ridge Racer games. I expected that to be true or accurate but the truth is that this one IS NOT the best RR game ever made, and only Namco can make a better RR. The game's fast alright but does not feel as fast as say Ridge Racer Type 4. There are only 25 cars to use here and that's not enough. The tracks lack variety, the sounds are just satisfactory (RR's music is known to be great but not on the N64), and the collisions are more unrealistic. Graphics are solid throughout.
The game has selectable engines for those who want play variety. You can play the game ala the original RR or others. But it's just too bad that there's no option to play the engine of R4, which is the pinnacle of the RR series in gameplay (arcade racing with minor simulation elements combined in play).
RR64 on the N64 is good overall, but it pales in comparison with the PSX Ridge Racers. If you've got both an N64 and a PSX, go get R4 instead...it's the best to play with! If you've got only an N64, you can play this but mind you...it's not as great as everyone says.
