Playstation Who?
Date of Review: May 18, 2000
I know what you're thinking, what is this Playstation game doing on the N64. Well I'll tell you, Kicking but. This is unquestionably one of the best racing games on the N64.
Those who are expecting a Gran Turismo clone should look elsewhere, this game is about arcade fun. With company like World Driver Championship and Top Gear Overdrive, this game should have no trouble attracting an audience. However, don't expect the craziness found in Mario Kart or Diddy Kong, this game isn't as blatantly aimed at youngsters as those.
What makes this game stand out, you ask. Well that's easy, pretty much everything. The graphics are unreal, for the N64, the sound is CD quality, and the control is flawless. If you are looking for technical superiority, this is your game.
The game, however, is not perfect, and it's imperfections are what lead to it's unperfect score. One of the gripes I have is about the lack of detail in the car models, they are so bland. Strangely, these same bland cars seem to float across the screen, instead of roll, but that is minor. A major gripe is the games lack of originality. If you played any Ridge Racer gmae befoe then you've played this one.
All in all the game's positive points outweigh it's negative one's, and that's why it gets a four. Play it, you'll be glad you did. And if you don't find this game entertaining, then at least you can have the satisfaction of telling your Playstation friends that the N64 has a Playstation game done better.
