Product Review

Are you a Zombie or just happy to see me?

by   millerpress ,   Jan 25, 2001

Pros:  Great Creepy Fun! You can play it over and over!

Cons:  Not any different from the Playstation version.

The Bottom Line:  If you have not played it yet then get to it! This is a great creepy game that will keep you interested from start to finish.

Overall Rating: 5/5 stars

Author's Review

I’ve played a version of this game on the Playstation and really liked it. Very creepy! When I received this game as a gift for the N64. I was worried that all the fun had all ready been had and what good would it be to play it on a different system. I’m a big fan of the Resident Evil series so I gave it a chance based on the fact I was in the mood to get creeped out again.

Let start simple:

The goal is simple, get out of the city and get out fast! Raccoon City is not what you call the vacation capitol of the world here. Thanks to a bio chemical company called Umbrella, the undead are out looking for brains man! In an attempted to create the ultimate bio weapon, Umbrella develops a virus to wipe out whole cites. The virus though doesn’t really kill anybody, just turns them into zombies. (Bummer!) But with further teasing they learn they can use the virus to create super undead solders! (Bonus!) So they experiment with the good folks in Raccoon City! (Those luck stiffs! HA! Get it? Oh never mind.)
Leon is a cop who just got transferred to the Raccoon police department. He finds out that this was not such a choice assignment after all. (Zombies are not as fun as they look!) Claire is the sister to Chris Redfield, one of the lead agents in the Raccoon City Police Department special task force known as S.T.A.R.S. Chris goes missing and Claire head to Raccoon City to find out why.

Game play:

It’s not any different than Playstation version. It’s a 3rd person view style game. Lots of easy to solve puzzles as long as you look for items in every room and not try to skip any. Several types of weapons are available to both characters Leon and Claire such as a standard hand gun, shotgun, bow caster, grenade luncher and at one point in the game you even get a missile launcher! Boo Yeah! “Nothing kills a zombie better than my old six shooter.”
“Oh yeah, what kind of six shooter is it?”
“Just a little old missile luncher!” BOOM!

Controlling the zombie hunter:

Controls take a little getting use to if you haven’t played the game before. Up on your analog stick will always be forward movement. Doesn’t matter what way you’re facing, it will always be forward. This can be a problem when your not used to it and you want to get away from a group of zombies fast. (Feet don’t fail me now! What the? I’m going towards them and not the other way! Ahhhhhh!)

I’ve won! Now I must play again:

What I really like about this game is the fact that you have two main characters (Leon and Claire) which gives you two story lines. You start by choosing which person you want to start with and play out that story. As that character you will get to play out the whole game, beat it, then start at the beginning as the other. Once you beat the game through the eyes of both characters, then you get to see the big ending. The fun doesn’t stop there! Now try starting over and this time start with a different person. For example you have all ready played the game with Leon first then Claire. Now go back and play Claire first and Leon second. The story line will go down a bit different.
Once you beat the game with both characters you will receive a ranking based on how long it took to play the game and how many times did you have to save your progress. A and B rankings will unlock secret items that you can use the next time you play. (I’ll let you discover what they are on your own.) If you can get an A or B ranking in under 2mins this will unlock a bonus game where you are a marine trying to get out of the city within the allotted time.

Just not for the kiddies:

“Hey Daddy! Why is that man pulling the head off of the other guy?”
“What? Good lord child! Don’t look! DON’T LOOK!”
This is in now way a kid’s game. I’m sure there are kids out there that will have no problems playing it. But as a parent with 2 kids of my own, I would never let them see this one until they are about 40 years old! Kids under 13, no way! Kids between 13 and 18, parents you have been warned! This is a very violent game with lots of blood and gore! There is an option to turn the blood off or change it’s color but the fact remains…it’s a zombie shooting gallery! If your over 18 then I suggest turning the blood to max level, waiting till 1am, turn all the lights out, turn up the sound on the TV and enjoy getting the wits scared out of you! Watch as you turn from “I can handle anything!” to “I’m not walking down the dark hallway to the bathroom without a shotgun and the US Marines!”

I give it a full 5 star rating! This game, though not for kids, is a true classic in both horror and video gaming fun!
