Author's Review

Resident Evil 2 for N64 features excellent graphics and the best storyline and character development of any RPG/adventure on the Nintendo 64 to date (yes, its better than Zelda).

The best part about this game is the graphics. I found that the first few times I played I got so absorbed looking at the backgrounds that some zombie fellow began biting on my neck before I knew what hit me. I was amazed that they fit this game on a cart, considering it took 2 cd's on the Playstation. The reason they were able to do this is 10-1 compression. The in-game graphics look a bit better than the Playstation, although the non-cd cutscenes are not quite as good.

The premise of the game focuses around a pair of cops that are there to investigate the zombies that have been terrorizing this town. You will be able to play as both characters, complete with different intros and different cutscenes. Once you have played through both sides of town with both characters ("A" and "B" games) you will have access to Tofu, a game mode where your character is a huge 3D lump of soy protein tastiness that fights only with a tiny knife. This was totally the highlight of the game.

My one qualm with the game is because all the backgrounds are prerendered and not polygonal, though they look beautiful the camera angle does not change. This can make it very difficult to navigate in the larger scenes, because it seems that the PC (player character) is very far away from the action. The R.E. team says the Dreamcast version will feature in game rendered backgrounds and multiple camera angles, with more of a Tomb Raider style camera. Look for that in the future.
