This is what was eating Gilbert Grape!
Pros:
Great gameplay, stunning graphics, nice sound, pretty scary plot.
Cons:
Extremly gory, sometimes a bit too scary for me.
The Bottom Line:
Warning: Resident Evil 2 is very violent and gory...not for children, teenagers, or adults who are easily disturbed.

Author's Review
Note: This isn't an opinion written by a big time gamer. I'm not good at writing reviews on video games, but I will give this one a chance, there are too many issues I want to discuss.
Resident Evil 2 was one of my latest rentals for our Nintendo 64. I had rented the children some games, and gotten a wild hair to rent myself and my husband one to toy with. I wanted something beside the usual Mario Party and Pokemon that the boys always have, and opted for something a bit more mature. Residential Evil's scary cover caught my eye...
I brought it home, waited until the kids went to bed tonight, and popped her in. (Husband's not at home, and I thought it would be a good idea to try the new game out before he got home. It couldn't be too scary, it was just a video game for cryin' out loud!) There is a message stating that the game was extremely gory. I ignored it, and proceeded to go though the motions. New game, choose character, yada yada yada. Oh...they DID ask what level of gore I wanted and what color I wanted the blood to be. Of course I chose the worst, to get the full effect of the game. (Highest level of gore and red blood.)
As the game begins, you are on this street with mass destruction and zombies coming at you right and left. I was a bit confused at figuring out how to get around smoothly. You use the analog, and you must rotate by holding left and right, and move forward by moving it up, and backward by holding it down. You have to fight them off starting off with a handgun or a knife. You can pick up other weapons later.
As I said earlier, I'm not much into video games, and I couldn't fight the zombies off. One was eating my leg, and another was on my back eating at my neck. They dove on top of me and ate me! How rude. Then I get a YOU DIED! message on the screen.
Hmmmmm...yeah that's it! I had a brain fart. I went to website and found a cheat for invincibility. (If you want it, email me=) I punched it in on the load game screen, the main menu popped up, and I proceeded to play again. HA! This time when they tried to eat me I would throw them off and either run like hell or try to shoot them. They never did any damage, so the cheat worked!
I proceeded into a gun shop, where there was a story bit about a human gun store owner left in an almost all zombitized (no, that's not a word...I made it up.) neighborhood. The the zombies end up getting him I think. I heard him scream when I left. I then followed what I guess was the only path to the police station, fighting off zombies the whole way.
The police station was full of zombies. I talked to a dying human cop in a room of the police station, and he gave me a key and told me to rescue the survivors. (Never did see one.) I used the computer in the lobby to use the key to open the electronic doors.
Upon entering one of the doors I just unlocked, the game got a bit too scary for me. There is this thing...this half man and half something...it was on the ceiling! It was absolutely the most horrible thing I had ever seen in my life. Good thing I was invincible. I finally got away from this thing slithering around on the ceiling and floor, and ran into what did me in...
A zombie tried to attach to my leg, and somehow I stepped on her head. It even had sound effects. I was disgusted and scared to death, so I turned it off. I liked it, but there is no way I can sit here and play it alone. I'll have to wait until the hubby's at home to try it again.
I'm sorry that I can't tell you all of the technical bits and tips about Resident Evil 2, but I can tell you this; If you want very realistic and shocking graphics and gameplay, surprise factor, and the element of fear...this is the game for you. Keep in mind that the content is very graphic and gory, (we are talking half eaten people here) and that this game is not suitable for children. It's probably not even suitable for most adults. It is however, good entertainment if nothing else.
