Author's Review
This has got to be one of the best magazines available. Although I am too young to personally remember any of the times this magazine so fondly revisits, I thoroughly enjoy it. I don't personally subscribe, as the office I work in has a subscription and I read it there.
Reminisce comes out every two months, so unfortunately you only receive 6 issues a year. If you want more (which you probably will!) you can subscribe to Reminisce EXTRA to fill in those empty months! The subscription price is very reasonable ($18-$25/year, less if you can get a special rate).
Most of the articles and features are written by people around the country as they reminisce about the way things used to be. They tell stories about their first cars, about going off to war, about high school and girlfriends, about mom's homemade meals and about making it through the Depression without feeling poor. The stories are entertaining and educational, and there is something for everyone who wants to know (or remember) what it was like back then.
Because the magazine is written by people who were there, the time frame is limited to mostly early-1900's up until the 60's or 70's. Old photos (both b/w and color) are prolific and will definitely bring back memories for many people.
A typical issue offers many features. Memories from readers are sorted under various topics, for example, "The Worst Winter Ever" and "We Made Our Own Fun". Old-fashioned poems and ads are often published. Readers can write to inquire about antiques or to ask if anyone out there remembers the rest of the words to an old song (etc.), while other readers submit stories about their days in a one-room schoolhouse or their sweetheart on Valentine's Day. Headlines from years past are described, while knowledgable readers can guess what old car is pictured in "Name That Car!" Readers send in their favorite clean jokes, photos of their treasured heirlooms, and family recipes.
Some of the stories are hilarious, while others warm your heart. A good strong family ethic prevails, with great attitudes toward family, friends, work, and patriotism. Our nation would be alot better off today if people like these (Tom Brokaw's "Greatest Generation")were the majority of our population. This magazine helps people of my generation to better appreciate our parents and grandparents.
One of the best things about Reminisce (and Reiman Publications' other magazines) is that there are NO advertisements. The only ones you will find in Reminisce are either from Reiman Publications (a postcard that says "try our other magazines!" perhaps) or reprints of ads from the good old days. It's fun to compare the prices from back then with the ones we pay today.
I've had the opportunity to enjoy many of Reiman Publications' magazines over the years, but Reminisce is my absolute favorite. It is stuffed with treasures from front to back... and it's always fun to re-read later on! These gorgeous, high quality magazines are not the kind to throw away when you're done with them. These magazines are perfect for a medical or dental office, particularly one with a high number of older patients. I highly recommend this magazine... it may be called "Reminisce" but it's great for people of all ages!
