Author's Review
Shaving is a fact of life for most men and there are many different means to remove the hairs that slowly grow on the face and neck. Blades usually provide the closest shave, but electric razors offer more convenience and speed. I once used nothing but the old- fashioned hand- held bladed razor, but I now use a combination of manual blade and electric. And the electric razor that occupies a small space next to my bathroom sink is the Remington R- 1000 Powerclean Titanium Shaving System, a self- cleaning electric razor.
Basic Facts About This Electric Razor:
Remington R- 1000 Powerclean Titanium Shaving System features a hand- held electric razor with a separate base for storage and for cleaning. The razor itself features a cordless design with three floating heads designed to keep the blades in contact with the skin as much as possible, for the quickest shave.
On the side of the shaving device, there is a comfort select lever that slides back and forth between sensitive and normal settings. The back of the device has a pop- up trimmer that is ideal for trimming sideburns. It is released with the push of a button. An LED display indicates the level of charge available, with a scale that ranges from zero to one- hundred, in increments of twenty. If the charge is twenty or greater, the lighted area of the LED display will display green. If the charge is below twenty, the red lighted area will be displayed, indicating that the razor needs to be charged. Powering the razor requires the press of the button just below the Comfort Select lever, and just above the LED charge display. The power button is flat and is identified by a straight line with a circle.
The Remington R-1000 Powerclean Titanium Shaving System is so named because it offers a cleaning system. This cleaning action takes place in the storage base. This base is rather large in size and it features charging ability as well as cleaning ability. The hand- held razor is stored in the base by turning the razor upside down and placing it in the holder. An arm is then pressed down, grasping the bottom of the razor and holding it in place. This arm plugs itself into the bottom of the razor and keeps it charged.
The cleaning action of the Remington R-1000 Powerclean Titanium Shaving System is activated by pressing the clean button on the side of the base. Special cleaning fluid is poured into the base, and when the clean button is pressed, the two- minute cleaning cycle is activated. A small light indicates that cleaning is taking place. When the cleaning is over, the charge light will come on and the base will continue to charge the razor. If the fluid gets low, the Low Fluid light will activate.

Final Thoughts:
Remington R-1000 Powerclean Titanium Shaving System is my newest grooming aid- a product I received as a present this past Christmas and have been using since. This Remington electric razor offers much more than the average electric razor, for it not only serves as a grooming tool, it also offers its own cleaning system to keep the blades clean and in top- cutting condition.
I like to alternate between electric and manual razors because I feel that each type of razor serves a purpose. Manual razors shave most closely, but electric razors are good when you need to get the shaving task over as quickly as possible. On days when I oversleep a little bit or have an early appointment, I reach for my Remington R- 1000 Powerclean Titanium Shaving System to get my shaving completed quickly so I can run out the door. There is no need to wash your face or perform any other type of prep work with an electric razor. You just turn it on, run it over your face a few times, then shut it off and leave.
I liked the idea of having a self- cleaning system with my electric razor and this was the main reason I preferred the Remington R-1000 Powerclean Titanium Shaving System to the other electric razors. With other razors, you have to pop open the top of the electric razor and wipe out the tiny bits of hair. But with the Remington R- 1000, you just pop the razor on its base and press the clean button. The clean cycle then commences, flushing the blades with cleaning fluid and preparing it for the next use. The cleaning fluid is comprised of a special chemical mixture and it must be purchased from Remington. To prepare the fluid, you just pop open the base and pour the fluid into the opening in the base. When I first did this, something didnt seem right. The opening seemed too big and it looked like I was pouring the fluid into the hollow base, which didnt seem correct. But this is actually how it works. There is no special, small compartment for the fluid. It actually does pour directly into the base.
The cleaning system on the Remington R-1000 Powerclean Titanium Shaving System does perform quite nicely and I like not having to clean the hair myself. Beware, however, that the cleaning fluid has a scent that is like a combination of alcohol- based cleaner and a small amount of perfume- like fragrance. The heads of the razor will be coated with this fluid after each use, and the scent lingers. This means that, if you use the razor shortly after cleaning, your skin will smell like the fluid, which may not be to your liking. You may have to wash your face to eliminate the smell. Also, keep in mind that the fluid is not sealed tightly when in the base. This means that, if someone knocks the base over or you lift it up and tilt it, the fluid will come pouring out.
Now, lets talk about the actual shaving ability of the Remington R-1000 Powerclean Titanium Shaving System. This razor is a little different from what most people are used to with Remington. The company made a name for itself by producing razors that feature a foil head and straight bar for cutting. This razor offers three floating heads, similar to the design pioneered by competitive rival Norelco. Each of the heads contains about twelve small blades and the heads float as they glide across your skin. Each of the three heads protrudes from the base and easily moves in different directions as it touches the skin.
The closeness of the shave you get with Remington R-1000 Powerclean Titanium Shaving System is pretty good for an electric razor, but, of course, not as close as the shave you get when you use a manual hand razor with a sharp blade. Compared to other electric razors, I find the shave to be pretty good. This razor seems to perform best on the neck, removing hair at a level close enough to make the skin appear smooth. The moustache area is a little more difficult to shave with this razor and thus the shave is not as clean. Sometimes, if time permits, I will grab a manual blade razor and touch up this area above the lips. It doesnt look clean enough after using the Remington R- 1000.
Remington R- 1000 Powerclean Titanium Shaving System offers a razor that is comfortable to hold, but there is one flaw in the design that must be noted: The placement of the on/off switch. This switch is located in exactly the wrong place for right- handed people. If youre right handed (like the vast majority of the population), you will hold the razor in your right hand with your four fingers across the back and your thumb in the front- left, right where the on/off button is located. The problem with this location is that the button is very easy to accidentally press while you shave, shutting the power off and interrupting the process. I do this all the time, and I still have not trained myself not to place my thumb in this area. The button is exactly where it should not be, and since the button is flat and takes very little pressure to activate, you can expect to shut the razor off accidentally at least once with each use. Another annoyance is the arm that locks into the bottom of the razor, holding it on the base and keeping it charged. The problem with this arm is that it doesnt release very easily. Pressing down is all that is needed to release the grip, but it often takes a few presses to make it let go.
Because the Remington R-1000 Powerclean Titanium Shaving System offers self- cleaning and quick, long lasting charging, it is priced quite a bit higher than most electric razors. The retail price for this razor is around $120, which is about double the price of the popular priced electric razors. The cleaning fluid is expensive, too, selling for $8 for an eight ounce container. These prices will make many consumers shy away from making a purchase and unless you really like the idea of self- cleaning, then this razor is not worth the money.
Overall, the Remington R-1000 Powerclean Titanium Shaving System is a very good razor that offers good cutting ability, both with the three- head design and with the pop- up trimmer. The self- cleaning apparatus is nice and convenient, and the razors charge will hold for more than an hour. Certain features of the design could have been made better, but this is still a very good razor from Remington and I will continue to alternate it with hand razors as I go about my daily grooming routine.
