Remington PG-250 Electric Shaver: It has its uses, but trimming beards is not one

My wife bought this Electric shaving kit for me as a Christmas gift this past year and I guess it was a hint. I like my beard, but I hate having to trim it all the time so I just let it grow and eventually I look like Grizzly Adams or maybe a cross between him and Jerry Garcia. Anyway, I took the hint and gave it a shot.


The Remington PG-250 Electric Shaver

The kit is packed in a nice looking case with a place for each attachment to fit in it. Unfortunately they do not fit snug and are very loose inside so any minor bump and the attachments rock and roll inside the case. The shaver itself, however, fits nice and snug in the case and charges reasonably fast.

The case really does look nice, but its functionality is lacking. The shaver is heaver than the case and again, any small bump and the whole thing can go flying. I keep it resting on the back of the toilet tank because it kept falling off the sink every time someone washed their hands.

Assembly

When you first open the packaging, the AC adapter is not attached to the base. You have to connect the power plug to the base by inserting the pin and closing a small plastic catch. It took me about five minutes to figure it out. There was an instruction sheet but it was written in broken English and the diagrams did not look much like what I was working with. The AC adapter can be removed easily for traveling and packing.


Shaving

The device works great if you shave every day. The shaving head is very smooth and gives a nice close shave. If you are like me and shave about once a week, the regular shaving head is pretty much useless (except for maybe cleaning up the back of your neck) unless you use the beard trimmer first.

The beard trimmer (or sideburn) attachment works well for taking 4-5 day growth down to where the shaving head can handle cleaning up the rest. If you keep a beard of any formidable length, the bread trimmer will work but don’t rely on the plastic beard trimmer guides. The guides are very hard to work with and even with the guides in place it is hard to trim evenly. I have had better luck just eyeballing it with the bare trimmer.

The mustachio trimmer would probably work well for people with thin mustachio hairs but mine are thick and it doesn’t cut trough all of them so I have to use the beard trimmer for my mustachio as well.


Charging

When you first plug in the shaver, the instructions say to charge it for a full eight hours. No problem, plug it in before bed and its ready in the morning. I don’t know how fast the shaver charges in real world time, but I keep it in the charger when not using it and it is always charged up when I need it.


Conclusion

I would recommend this shaver for people who use a shaver on a daily basis and do not wear a beard. If you have a beard, you could find something that works better than this shaver. Still, it does get the job done, even if it isn’t exactly the way it was designed to.
