Author's Review
Reader's Digest has something for everyone. Each time I read it, I end up reading it from cover to cover! If you like crime and drama, or love to improve yourself, laugh, or read about people's experiences...Digest this magazine! It's published every month.
I love this magazine. You won't get bored, there are different kinds of articles. Every issue is divided into categories: People, Crime and Drama, The art of Living, Better You, World View, RD Health Guide, and the Book Section. There are around 2-4 articles under each category. My favorite is the "Better You" section. These are guides on how to improve yourself...your creativity, attitude, and your thinking. Right now I'm holding the July 2000 edition, where they teach you "How To Have Brilliant Ideas". Hmmm, not bad for a magazine...:)
There are also departments. Each department takes up one page. These departments are like "bookshelved" jokes. Virtual Hilarity is about computer humor, and Humour in Uniform are funny stories about the military. The departments are: Word Power, News of Medicine, Personal Glimpses, Facts of Life, Quotable Quotes, Laughter the Best Medicine, All in a Day's Work, Points to Ponder, Virtual Hilarity, Life's Like That and finally - Humour in Uniform. I love the Facts of Life department. It's sort of like a "trivia". It has interesting, not-so-common questions about life. Here's one question for you: "Are Humans the only animals that can recognise their own reflection?" Yes? No? MAYBE? Here you'll find scientific answers checked by researchers.
Do you think you can write a dictionary? Word power is the department where you answer a multiple choice vocabulary test. The words are not-so-tough, not-so-easy...in other words...they're words that you can use everyday, which makes this section important. Although I love this section, I personally love the "Interactive Version" of word power. You can find this on their website (www.readersdigest.com) and all you need is shockwave. These are some of the words: succulent, confection, bisque, hors d'oeuvre (if you noticed they're all about food! Yum!).
There are full color pictures and cartoony drawings. I love the drawings - sometimes I try to "get the style".
OK, to wrap it up...if Reader's Digest was food, it would be an appetizer, main course and dessert. It has a WIDE RANGE of articles, which is the main course, and the appetizer/dessert is the departments. This is definitely something worth digesting.
