Move over Hitler!
Date of Review: Mar 8, 2001
The Bottom Line: Good revival of 30's suspense matinees with a professor who uses unconventional methods and weapons too, in order to find artifacts. Certainly a classic!
I hear that they are going to release the 20th Anniversary Of Raiders at theatres sometime soon. (Don't know why they couldn't have also released Jaws for anniversaries). But I don't think anything can top this movie, as far as creative: a professor who is fighting the nazis off in search of a historical significance(the ark) armed with only a bullwhip, pistol and a tough attitude!
My favorite scenes are the opening with the ball rolling after him, and when one of the guides tries to quietly shoot Indy but out comes the whip and our traitor of a guide runs off in panic from Dr. Jones. It goes to show you what length some people will go to in order to make a buck. It's the "survival of the fittest"
The movie doesn't start to pick up action again until he goes to Karen Allen's bar in Cairo to look for the staff of rod in order to find the ark. It's priceless, in which Marion wants a piece of it...along with the Nazis that come barging in the door. The leader is Toht who says "Yes I know you will" when Marion begs him not to put the hot fire poker to her face. Right then, Indy pulls out his whip and pistol to get their attention. The place gets on fire and it's Indiana and Marion versus the five nazis. They(the nazi's) all die except for the leader Toht, he gets a nice burn on his hand with the medalion imprinted.
Next, Indy and Marion go to Sallah, a friend of Indy's. They explain their plans, and Marion and Indy decide to shop. (Another classic scene). I like it when the Swordsman does all these fancy sword tricks and Indy calmly shoots him. I heard they did it that way becase Harrison Ford's shoulder hurt too much for doing a fight scene.
After that, Indy thinks Marion died in a truck explosion. To make his day worse, he has to run into Belloq again. Indy sets out to get the ark and finds it, along with discovering Marion is still alive. The nazi's lock Indy and Marion in the hole to kill them in order to retrieve the ark. But Indiana and Marion manage to escape, causing another scene that proves to the Nazi's that it takes a lot to keep Indiana down.
Indy and Marion capture the ark and put it on a safe boat back home. Along the way, the Nazi's capture this ship and Marion again. Indy escapes, steals a Nazi uniform and threatens to blow up the ark unless they let Marion go.
Marion and Indy are now captured while the Nazi's open the ark. Inside are the ghosts to capture sin and takes the souls of all the Nazi's. Indy screams to Marion "Keep your eyes shut, don't look at it!"
At the end of the film, Indy doesn't get his fortune, but the ark is in a government warehouse along with a million other "top secret" items. Kind of left confused as to what happens, but this and the Last Crusade had the most interesting endings.
