Author's Review
All in all, Quake II is a good shooting game (at least until Perfect dark came out). But, it proves the following lesson: "Just because a game is good doesn't mean you have to buy it." I would get a computer, 56K Internet access, a 3D accelerator, and the PC version (I hope I didn't forget anything).
Peripherals: Memory card and rumble pak supported, expansion pak supported
Control:
I liked the way you can customize your controls (6 preset, plus custom settings). In my opinion, that was the second best part of the game, only to the multiplayer levels.
With customizing your own controls, control is never a problem. The controls are very responsive.
Sound:
The sound is very good. Each level has a different, and appropriate, soundtrack.
The sound effects are even better, and you can feel each bullet or kill on your screen.
Game modes:
Let me describe each game mode, and how to play it.
Here are the multiplayer (2-4 player) modes. There are about 10 different multiplayer levels. Depending on the mode, there are a few ways to win. Some include most kills in a period of time (time limit or morphing), and the first to get a certain number of kills.
*Deathmatch - Every man is for himself. Kill and try not to be killed.
*Fragteams - Players are in teams. Each team is supposed to kill enemies of the other team. (2 vs. 2, 3 vs. 1, or 2 vs. 1)
*FlagWars - Grab the opponent's flag, and return it to your base.
*Deathtag - Grab the flag, and kill as many opponents as you can with the flag. It's everyone against the one with the flag.
Single player has only one mode, but three difficulty settings.
*Mission - As a marine, there are twenty different missions for you to save the Earth. Each mission is a little different.
Weapons:
The weapons are good, and look radically different. I wish more appropriate damage levels were inflicted in some of the weapons. There is a very limited range of weapons. They include the railgun and shotgun.
Sensitivity issues:
Please keep the small children away from Quake II. The levels of violence might be disturbing.
Recommendation:
If you have a good computer, try buying the PC version. It's MUCH better.
If not, try Perfect Dark.
