Author's Review
If you're someone who values grphics above gameplay, then stop reading this review right now. Raster(the developer) made a clear choice: gameplay over visuals. Now if you're not as shallow as those whove already stopped reading, then Q2 has something to offer you.
For starters Q2 sports:
-2, 3, and 4 player multiplayer, 4 unique mods and 15 maps
-over 20 new single-player missions and 3 difficlulty levels
-12 weapons and 20 enemies
-interactive environments
But enough statistics. Let's discuss the game itself shall we? Yes, we shall. As I said before, the game focuses on fast, furious gameplay as opposed to lousy frame-rates with crisp visuals(a la Turok 2).
The graphics, to say the least, are low-res(ironically, even in hi-res mode). However, they support fairly large areas, many enemies, and dynamic lighting effects. The game (as any non-color blind idiot would soon realize), is quite colorful(quite a change from the PC version as you may remember...brown, brown, BROWN! Now I know what you're thinking "well, what are the colors like? Will they ruin the dismal mood of the PC masterpiece, and don't I have anything better to do?" The answers to those questions are that the new colors don't make the game look like Austin Power's pad, but merely take away the visual monotony of the original. As for my free time, that's none of your business.
Now on to what really matters... Gameplay! And for those of you who value this (not like those shallow fools, who no doubt own PS2's...), you're in for a real treat. The single player misssons are extensive and the maps are designed ingeniously. The game's difficulty level increase slowly so the learning curve's no problem. The levels also require you to actually accomplish certain objectives before exiting the level. Ammo, Aromor, and predictable health items are ambundant throughout the game. Enemies, and some bosses, are dispered evenly among the level. Scripted events happen; often an enemy will burst through a wall behind you. There are also numerous secrets in the game, sniff...sniff...replay value? While annoying, this rarely occurs and is basically the only gameplay flaw Q2 has. Well, except for the fact that it seems crude in comparison to masterpeices like Perfect Dark. I'm sorry I can't really explain this well, I suppose you should rent the game first anyway...
But enough about the single player game. Multiplayer is what Q2 is all about. And while the 2,3 and 4 player matches aren't up to par with the PC, they still kick trenmendous amounts of ass. It's hard to express to joy felt when you school your friends, (or enemies),when you school them with your mad Quake skills (assuming you have them) while they're right there. Anyway, the maps are tightly engineered. They are designed to that there's no place to hide and so power-ups and weapons are everywhere.
Also, sound is good. Especially in a game. So is creepy music. What's even better is great sound, and really eerie music in Q2 which is what the FX in this conversion offer. Once agin, nothing spectacular, but they help to set the mood.
Right, my hands are getting tired, (from typing, you pervert), so I'll wrap up. Bottom line: If you like Quake and if you like solid, furious gameplay, and gore(MMM...gore...), then you will have a blast with this "Angry Version." If not, then go away, and stop reading before this review is done. But is you're not sure, give the game a rent. Whether or not you rent or buy the game, I guarantee it's end up i your digital library.
