Product Review

Good for a first-timer

by   Bungleicious ,   Jul 17, 2000

Pros:  easy to learn, fairly fun

Cons:  too much training, pretty linear

Overall Rating: 3/5 stars

Author's Review

Tactics Ogre was the first strategy game I have played on Playstation, and I think that was a good thing. However, I think more serious players might be disappointed by the touting that it is non-linear.

This game is fairly easy to learn, and once you get used to the fact that you must train, train, and train some more, the battles can be lots of fun. But dear Lord, the training you must do. First tip I would give anyone about this game, get good at the training. It can become very tedious. Going into battles with enemies one level above you can be very helpful in gaining points, but any more than a level up are just going to kill you and frustrate you. I recommend training a few people up a couple of levels, and then pitting your lower-level people against them. This is a quick way to gain points.

The battle fields are simple and somewhat boring at first, with only minor obstacles to overcome. The longer you play, the more advanced the battle fields become. This can challenge you to use your money and your equipment more wisely. Also, the more varied your army is in terms of what element they are aligned with, the more options you will have in changing them (into wizards, clerics, etc.).

As far as the story line being non-linear, well....I wouldn't go so far as to say that. There are a very limited amount of things that you can decide. Once you reach certain milestones in the game, it gives you a couple of choices, but thats about it. Some things are decided for you - certain people leave your army automatically, which kind of sucks.

The graphics aren't anything to write home about, but they are workable and wouldn't offend the eyes or anything.

There are some different options in the game, such as a helpful information mode. The game is (of course) save-able, and tells you how many hours of game play you have.

All in all, this game is average. I was hooked for about 3 months straight, then kind of lagged off, which might not be saying anything about the game, but rather my attention span.

I would recommend this game for someone who is interested in learning how to play strategy games, but not for more advanced players.
