My Favorite Rum to Date!
Pros:
Distinct, pure flavor that is hard to dislike.
Cons:
Not quite as complex of a flavor mix as some rum connoisseurs enjoy.
The Bottom Line:
So much is fundamentally correct with this rum, it is very hard to pass up, if you love rum, trying Pyrat is a must!

Author's Review
I have tried countless rums in every price point from Parrot Bay, Captain Morgan's Private Stock, Bacardi 8, to Zaya and Sea Wynde as well as many others not worth mentioning and Pryat XO Reserve is undoubtedly my favorite.
The problem with many rums is that they tend to give me a sickeningly sweet aroma, then when I taste them, there is more bite than flavor. Pyrat seems to have a very pure flavor that is just done well, it goes down smooth, doesn't have as unpleasantly sweet an aroma, yet tastes sweeter without the sharp bite of lesser rums.
Most of the finer rums are made from pot stills and use very complex varieties of spices and flavors to give them a more distinct, refined flavor. A perfect example of this is Sea Wynde, which I like as well, but is a little less rum like. The thing that makes Pyrat so special is that they use the same high quality methods used to make more complex rums to achieve a rum that is extremely pure and good tasting.
While Pyrat can be used quite successfully as a mixer, many people may have a hard time using a $33 bottle of rum for mixers instead of something like Bacardi gold which can be had for half the price. You can drink it in a snifter by itself, but I always prefer my rum with coke in a 40/60 ratio.
