There Is Nothing "Pro" About This Pyle!

Date of Review: Apr 15, 2006

The Bottom Line:  I would not recommend this cassette player. It is simply too highly priced for the lack of features. This unit is worth about $20 in my opinion.
I purchased this Pyle Pro PT649D to replace my Technics RS-TR262. I made multiple attempts to have my Technics repaired, but found it would be cheaper to replace it. Next came trying to find a reasonably priced replacement. We live in a small town, and electronic options are limited to Wal-Mart, Radio Shack, and Sears satellite stores. Finding a replacement in town wasn't working, so I ordered mine on line from MCM electronics. Even there, I only had two choices, the Pyle deck, and one made by JVC costing almost $200. Since I had only paid $79.00 for my Technics, I figured the Pyle Pro priced at $89.00 would be comparable. WRONG!
Out of the box, the cassette deck looks good. It has cool graphics all the way across the front, and comes with brackets so that it can be mounted in a professional DJ rack. Anyway, I get the Pyle Pro hooked up to my system and find that the mechanisms aren't strong enough to wind, rewind, or play 90 minute cassette tapes. I had to rewind a tape by hand, and finally got the left side to play the tape, the right side wouldn't. I have DJ'd for years, and do editing and transfers. A lot of material either comes from, or needs to go to cassette. If you buy this cassette deck, this is what you can expect:
Tape counter is mechanical, not digital, and you will need good lighting, or a flashlight to read, because the numbers are very small.
All the buttons for play features are very "clickish", not fluid and smooth acting like most higher end tape decks. When you play, or rewind, the buttons snap, and make the playback squeak, or chirp. Ejecting a tape is the same way, very snappish.
This cassette deck does not have auto reverse features, you will have to turn the tape over manually.
My Technics deck had fully digital readout, auto reverse, music search, tape A to B play options, continuous play, smooth fluid ejection and play buttons.
I was very disappointed with what I received for the money I paid. I really thought that buying a cassette deck now would be like buying a VCR. I expected good features at a low price. I guess that with no demand for cassette players, the few companies making them require a high price. If you are needing a cassette deck for other than just playing some of your old cassettes, I recommend coughing up the money and buying higher up the cost scale.

Pros
It sports some neat graphics. Great if you just want to look at it.
Cons
Mechanisms are weak, buttons snap, no auto features, small counter numbers.
