Overall Rating: 5/5 stars

Author's Review

I've seen this movie about 2 times now and it gets better every time.

It's a simple but moving love story. Adam Sandler plays a man who is obsessed with getting this "frequent flyer miles" from "smart choice" food products. He discovers that this deal is almost a steal.

But the man story is between him and the character played by Emily Watson. At first Sandler is hesitant to date her. Then once he does he quickly falls in love with her.

There is another "B" story were Sandler calls a phone-sex line. He gets in trouble. The persons who own the sex-line black mail the Sandler character. They beat him up and they extort his bann funds. One of the funnies scenes is when he is trying to negotiate with the thugs and he notices a "99 cents "store and he says something like; "Please leave me alone (99 cents) Don't bother me ever again." Then they hit him and they chase after him. Then when he's running from them they ctch up to him by truck and they say "Why are you running? We know where you live." It's priceless Sandler and priceless PT Anderson ( the writer director).

It's also funny when Sandler asks the Rober Smigel character ( who plays a dentist ) for psychiatric help. The Sandler starts to cry. It is sad and funny at the same time.

Another aspect of this film ( and PT Anderson films in general ) is his use of coincidence. For example; when Sandler is on a pay phone in Hawaii with Watson and when he makes a "connection" literally and figuratively with her, the pay-phone light goes on. That's cute. And I like it when a cab drops off a small organ ( called an HARMONIUM ) in front of his place of bussiness. This organ helps Sandler to relax and it helps him bond with the Watson character. It's also cute.

Anderson used coinciedences more in Magnolia as in when it literally rains frogs. I guess, like the late Swedich psychiatris Carl Jung, he believes in "synchronisity". This is when the physical world starts to resemble the psyche. In other words; what happens in the physical world can mirror what we're thinking psycholigically. It can help us break through a mental block. It's interesting.

There is great chemistry between Watson and Sandler. Watson is sweet, gentle, and touching. Sandler is crazy, angry, and charming. I like when he feels he is making a fool of his self at the restaurant with Watson and then he blows up. He goes into the men's room and he literally destroys the bathroom. He's insane!

I like when Anderson uses the "He needs me" song from the movie Popeye. He uses it when Sandler meets Watson in Hawaii. It's done well.

Another notable scene is when Sandler confronts the man who is black-mailing him ( played by Philip Seymour-Hoffman). He tells him off ( with phone and cord in hand)! It's hilarious.

In closing this film is worth a rental. It's one of the better films by PT Anderson ( I don't think that he really makes bad films). The film is cute and sweet and touching and moving. It's a feel-good movie. It's quite refreshing when compared with most of the dark and violent movies that come out of Hollywood.

Sincerely,

SteveHW
