Product Review

Empowered Again

by   elonna ,   May 9, 2002

Pros:  great information in easy to read format with interesting vignettes

Cons:  follow-up to recent school shooting would be helpful

The Bottom Line:  Although I borrowed this from the library, I plan on buying my own copy.

Overall Rating: 5/5 stars

Author's Review

I read Gavin de Becker's previous book, The Gift of Fear, and loved it. So I was excited when I stumbled across this book at the library. I have two children, one boy and one girl, so this book was very interesting to me.

The book begins with a gripping tale of a mother saving herself and her daughter from an attacker. Much like Gavin's earlier book, he then dissects the story and reveals along the way how the mother listened to her intuition (and how she didn't) in order to escape harm.

From there, the book is divided into several chapters addressing different aspects of keeping our children safe. Safe from sexual predators, guns, schools and 'bad' friends. It allays our fears and highlights relevant ones. Although each chapter isn't completely independent from the next, one could certainly read only the ones which were relevant. I suggest reading them all because you never know when you may be called upon to safeguard a child. I especially like the chapter on girls and keeping them safe.

I read this book cover to cover and plan on reading his next book on terrorism. Keep them coming!
