Product Review

Klipsch Pro Media 2.1

by   xbig69benzx ,   Sep 29, 2007

Pros:  Impressive price, impressively accurate sound reproduction.

Cons:  Country of origin (made in China), is the only potential concern for some buyers.

The Bottom Line:  Highly reccomended, accurate sound reproduction. Definitely better speakers than what the competition has come up with.

Overall Rating: 5/5 stars

My experience using this product is jaw dropping. Never in my wildest dreams did I think that bookshelf sized speakers could fill a whole room, (a room without full walls mind you, it's a porch), with mellifluous melodies. Any audiophile would definitely appreciate the sound quality of these speakers. One tends to forget that these are relatively small speakers because the subwoofer module really fills out the low frequencies. These speakers are 3-way (subwoofer module, which houses the amplifier, midrange driver, and horns for high-frequency sound reproduction). I have a lot of experience working with and listening to speakers and I would consider myself an audiophile. I have worked in the commercial entertainment industry and the Klipsh name has come up in the past in commercial venues where I have worked (such as the Sarasota Opera House). In fact, these speakers are so good that Phil, (the assistant technical director), didn't believe me when I told him that the sounds were amplified, (I guess his hears told him that the sounds were real and not reproduced by speakers). The only drawback to these speakers is that they are certainly more fun to listen to with a good digital recording because they have a tendency to reproduce sounds almost too well (i.e. you can hear and deficiencies or flaws in the recording). These speakers are extremely accurate at reproducing sound. The subwoofer volume level control is a nice added feature because people tend to listen to things at low volume levels with the bass cranked up a little and if you want to really crank the overall volume the sub level can be turned down a little and the highs really shine crystal clear through the satellites. Apparently Klipsh makes speakers that are very responsive even to low levels of amplification (i.e. they are very efficient at turning a signal into audible sound).
The reason I purchased this computer is because I just recently purchased a new laptop computer, and the computer is usually set up on the screen porch because we have a really small house, don't use air-conditioning, and it's a really nice place to sit in the middle of a "jungle" and listen to all kinds of music, these speakers can reproduce it all. I like to listen to the XM satellite radio through AOL, and the tiny little built-in laptop speakers were just not producing much sound at all, let alone any bass. Yeah, the laptop speakers produce some sound, but the lower frequencies are completely lacking, (so it's not exactly enjoyable to listen to dance music if you can't even hear the downbeats, the computer's built-in speakers are rather lackluster for lower frequencies), and the built-in laptop speakers have a serious deficiency in the dB (decibel) department. The porch where the new Klipsh speakers are located at is not exactly a friendly environment for speakers, so these speakers will get the full durability test. They appear very durable, and the first thing one will notice when picking up the system is that it's very heavy. 200 watts (peak I think), well it requires some horsepower to fill up a whole room with sound, and these speakers are compact, heavy, and efficient, and they get quite loud but not obnoxiously loud. I will update as to their resistance to moisture and general abuse after I have owned them long enough to judge their durability.
I love the sound quality and impressive bass from these speakers. The bass is really loud, and it seems to really hit hard down in the lower frequencies. The subwoofer module is ported so they tend to respond with a punch (albeit concentrated at a certain frequency). Some other epinions users think that these speakers are lacking mid bass, but I don't really think that's true since you can control the ratio of mid bass to bass by adjusting the subwoofer level (i.e. turn down the subwoofer level, since the mid bass speaker is located in the satellites). These speakers are amazing and I think they've come down in price at one point (I think they were getting $200 for this system at one point in time). I'm not sure they're worth quite that much $, but I can see paying $160 for a set of these, they are really rocking' speakers.
There aren't very many cons and there isn't much to hate about these speakers. The only drawback I can foresee is the fact that these speakers are made in China, which worries me a little, since these speakers are not cheap, and they do appear to be made to high quality standards, but the warranty is only for one year, and I would expect at least a two year warranty if they're going to subcontract their manufacturing out to some Chinese factory to make up for the Chinese quality control issues that I have experienced in the past with some Chinese made products. It is really too early to tell, and hopefully they made in China sticker stands for value, and only time will tell. Although it's worth noting that I do not foresee any problems with these speakers and I will update this review after I have had enough time to judge the durability of the product. It is worth noting that some people don't like the sound of horn loaded Klipsh speakers, but I think they sound great and you must really hear them to decide for yourself whether or not you like them, but I had already heard Klipsh speakers at work and I thought the horn loaded design is amazing and the horns really shine in the higher frequencies. Classical music and every other type of music is accurately and easily reproduced by these little wonders.
Here is the Klipsch marketing information right off the box:
"For over 60 years we've made speakers for people who are as passionate about great sound as we are. That's why every Klipsch speaker is horn loaded to create a remarkably accurate listening experience for your music and movies. From our smallest satellites to our acclaimed professional theater installations, our speakers deliver sound that's do lifelike, you have to feel it to believe it."
"Connects easily to virtually any source, including two-channel soundcards or any device with a stereo mini-plug, such as gaming consoles or portable audio devices."
"Headphone jack allows for a more immersive private listening experience."
